Some users are facing a situation where the hotkey combination doesn&#8217;t work on their Windows 10 computer. For instance, nothing may happen when you use the hotkeys. Or you don&#8217;t get the Snip &amp; Sketch screen capture notification in the Taskbar notification area.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to fix the Snip &amp; Sketch screen clipping feature in Windows 10 or Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<p><strong>Pre-Start Checklist:<\/strong> If nothing happens when you press <kbd>Win<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>S<\/kbd>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, click Run, and type &#8220;<code>ms-screenclip:<\/code>&#8221; and click OK. See if it launches the snip menu. This is to check whether the issue is with the app or your keyboard.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ms-screenclip-run.png\" alt=\"ms-screenclip run command\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" \/><\/li>\n<li>There are chances that one of the keys may be stuck. It&#8217;s better to test with a new keyboard first.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/winkey-shortcuts-not-working-enable-all-hotkeys\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Winkey isn&#8217;t disabled<\/a> on your system for <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_10-start-win_menu\/disable-windows-key-in-game-mode\/09841645-f3b8-4e6d-823d-8ac8b066df45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gaming purposes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Test the other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/master-list-keyboard-shortcuts-windows-10\/\">Winkey shortcuts<\/a> to know if the <kbd>Win key <\/kbd>isn&#8217;t disabled.<\/li>\n<li>If the clipboard is not working in general, follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/take-screenshot-windows-different-ways-prnt-scrn\/#print-screen-does-not-work\">clipboard troubleshooting<\/a> procedure first.<\/li>\n<li>Perform <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd\">clean boot troubleshooting<\/a> (i.e., disabling third-party services and startup apps) and see if the problem still occurs. User &#8220;<a class=\"c-hyperlink message-user-info-link user-name-show-white-space\" title=\"TYPz\" href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/profile\/8d3e56dc-9b2c-4c30-8674-340173f61b55\" data-bi-id=\"message-username-link\" data-bi-linkuserid=\"8d3e56dc-9b2c-4c30-8674-340173f61b55\">TYPz<\/a>&#8221; indicated that the &#8220;Grammarly&#8221; software was interfering with Win+Shift+S and <code>ScreenClippingHost.exe<\/code> was terminating abruptly. Disabling Grammarly fixed the issue.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2>[Fix] Win+Shift+S Screen Clip hotkey not working<\/h2>\n<p>One of the steps below should fix the <kbd>Win<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>S <\/kbd>Snip &amp; Sketch screen clipping capability for you.<\/p>\n<h3>1) Check the Snip &amp; Sketch hotkey setting<\/h3>\n<p>The Snip &amp; Sketch hotkey combination can be changed in Settings. It could be possible that the Print Screen button is chosen as the Snip &amp; Sketch hotkey.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start \u2192 Settings \u2192 Ease of Access \u2192 Keyboard<\/li>\n<li>If you want to use <kbd>Win<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>S<\/kbd> for snipping, disable &#8220;Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping.&#8221;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/prntscrn-ease-access.png\" alt=\"complete guide to taking screenshots\" width=\"700\" height=\"188\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>Or, you may have the above option enabled and test if the Snip &amp; Sketch hotkey works by pressing the Print Screen key. This can be helpful, especially if a third-party program has taken over the <kbd>Win<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>S<\/kbd> hotkey combination.<\/p>\n<h3>2) Enable the Clipboard history<\/h3>\n<p>Some users have indicated that turning on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clear-windows-10-clipboard-history-shortcut\/\">clipboard history<\/a> feature helped fix the Snip &amp; Sketch issue.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Settings window, and click System \u2192 Clipboard.<\/li>\n<li>Turn on <strong>Clipboard history<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>3) Enable Snip &amp; Sketch switch notifications<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Settings window, and click System \u2192 Notification &amp; actions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enable<\/strong> the toggle switch named &#8220;Get Notifications from apps and other senders&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Under &#8220;Get Notifications from these senders,&#8221; enable the toggle switch for <strong>Snip &amp; Sketch<\/strong>.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em><strong>Important:<\/strong> On Windows 11, you&#8217;ll have to enable notifications for &#8220;<strong>Snipping Tool<\/strong>&#8221; instead. The old Snipping Tool and Snip &amp; Sketch apps are replaced by the <strong>new Snipping Tool<\/strong> in Windows 11. There is no &#8220;Snip &amp; Sketch&#8221; in Windows 11.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23951\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/snip-sketch-sender-notification.png\" alt=\"snip and sketch notification settings window\" width=\"699\" height=\"224\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6419 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hand.png\" alt=\"hand point icon\" width=\"49\" height=\"27\" \/>Note:<\/strong> Regardless of your notification or Focus Assist setting, the screen clip would be copied to the Windows clipboard anyway. If you wish to test that out, you can open a Paint window and paste the image from the clipboard. Under the hood, the Snip &amp; Sketch tool also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/screenshot-portion-screen-windows-10-winkey-shift-s\/#save\">saves your screen clip<\/a> to a temporary folder.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Disable &#8220;Automatically save screenshots&#8221; to get the toast notification<\/h4>\n<p>In Windows 11, the recent versions of the Snipping Tool save the screenshots to your Pictures\\Screenshots folder. However, when the &#8220;Automatically save screenshots&#8221; is enabled, users don&#8217;t get the toast notification when a snip is done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/snipping-tool-save-screenshots.png\" alt=\"snipping tool save screenshots automatically\" width=\"643\" height=\"527\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31934\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unchecking<\/strong> &#8220;Automatically save screenshots&#8221; seems to resolve the issue.\n<\/div>\n<h3>4) Turn off Focus Assist<\/h3>\n<p>Focus assist (also called &#8220;Quiet Hours&#8221; in earlier versions of Windows 10) allows you to avoid distracting notifications when you need to stay focused, and is set by default to activate automatically under certain conditions. The Focus Assist feature may be hiding the Snip &amp; Sketch notifications on your device.<\/p>\n<p>You can turn focus assist on or off via the action center icon on the taskbar or through Settings.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Start \u2192 Settings \u2192 click System \u2192 <strong>Focus Assist<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Turn off Focus Assist.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Customize your priority list&#8221; under the &#8220;Priority only&#8221; mode.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that <strong>Snip &amp; Sketch<\/strong> is added to the list of apps in the &#8220;Priority list&#8221; screen.<\/li>\n<li>After setting Focus Assist to Off or Priority Mode, close the Settings window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>(Some users have reported that even though their Focus Assist was Off, they had to manually re-add the Snip &amp; Sketch app to the priority list to make the Snip &amp; Sketch notifications work.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The next time you use the <kbd>Win<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>Shift<\/kbd>\u00a0+\u00a0<kbd>S<\/kbd> and create a screen clip, you should see a notification area message like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/snip-sketch-notification.png\" alt=\"snip and sketch notification\" width=\"649\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clicking on it will open the Snip &amp; Sketch window from where you can edit, annotate, or share the image.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/snip-sketch-window.png\" alt=\"snip and sketch window\" width=\"531\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>(To know how the Winkey+Shift+S hotkey works, check out the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/screenshot-portion-screen-windows-10-winkey-shift-s\/\">Screenshot a Portion of the Screen using Winkey+Shift+S<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5) Reset Snip &amp; Sketch<\/h3>\n<p>If the above settings don&#8217;t help, see if resetting Snip &amp; Sketch helps.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Apps &amp; Features.<\/li>\n<li>Select Snip &amp; Sketch from the list.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Advanced options<\/strong> link.<\/li>\n<li>In the resulting screen, click Reset.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>See also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reset-app-settings-windows-10\/\">How to Reset a Windows 10 App When it Fails to Work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>6) Uninstall and Reinstall Snip &amp; Sketch<\/h3>\n<p>Try uninstalling Snip &amp; Sketch and reinstalling it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Apps &amp; Features.<\/li>\n<li>Select Snip &amp; Sketch from the list.<\/li>\n<li>Click Uninstall.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Reinstall Snip &amp; Sketch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, reinstall Snip &amp; Sketch using <strong>PowerShell<\/strong>. Open PowerShell as administrator and run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.ScreenSketch | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register \"$($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml\"}<\/pre>\n<p><em> <strong>Important: <\/strong>On Windows 11, you&#8217;ll need to uninstall &#8220;Snipping Tool&#8221; via Apps &amp; Features. Then, open Store, look for &#8220;<strong>Snipping Tool<\/strong>&#8221; and reinstall it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>7) Incompatible 3rd party software<\/h3>\n<p>Third-party software may be interfering with the Snip &amp; Sketch screen clipping functionality.<\/p>\n<pre>Examples:\n\nWin+Shift+S snipping tool breaks when maxto is running\nhttps:\/\/github.com\/digitalcreations\/MaxTo\/issues\/386\n\nWin + Shift + S shortcut not working - CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2020:\nhttps:\/\/community.coreldraw.com\/talk\/coreldraw-graphics-suite-2020\/f\/coreldraw-graphics-suite-2020-for-windows\/62012\/win-shift-s-shortcut-not-working<\/pre>\n<p>For instance, with Snip &amp; Sketch, you may be able to select a screen region, but the mouse may stay in cross-hairs when you release the click. And nothing may be saved to the clipboard.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s advisable to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clean-boot-windows-autoruns\/\">clean boot<\/a> Windows and see if the Snip &amp; Sketch screen clipping feature works properly.<\/p>\n<h3>8) Reinstall Windows Shell Components to fix &#8220;ms-screenclip&#8221; error<\/h3>\n<p>On some devices, the error &#8220;<strong><code>You'll need a new app to open this ms-screenclip link<\/code><\/strong>&#8221; appears when clicking on the New (snip) button in Snip &amp; Sketch window.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/snip-sketch-protocol-error.png\" alt=\"ms-screenclip-link app association error snip &amp; sketch\" width=\"438\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re getting the above error, reinstall the <strong>Windows Feature Experience Pack<\/strong> Feature on Demand package.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>What is\u00a0Windows Feature Experience Pack?<\/h4>\n<p>This Feature on Demand package includes features critical to Windows functionality. Microsoft suggests not to remove this package using any method &#8212; DISM, PowerShell, etc.<\/p>\n<pre>Feature: Windows Feature Experience Pack\n\nCapability Name: Windows.Client.ShellComponents~~~~0.0.1.0\nSample package name: Microsoft-Windows-UserExperience-Desktop-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab\nInstall size: 44.15MB\nSatellites: No\nAvailability: Windows 10, version 2004 and later.<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Reinstall Shell Components (Windows Feature Pack)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>To reinstall the Windows Feature Experience Pack, follow these steps:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure your system is connected to the internet.<\/li>\n<li>Run the following command in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.\n<pre>DISM \/Online \/Add-Capability \/CapabilityName:Windows.Client.ShellComponents~~~~0.0.1.0<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This reinstalls the Windows Client Shell Components (<strong>Windows Feature Experience Pack<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>If the above command doesn&#8217;t work for some reason, you may try to uninstall the component first and then reinstall it using the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Run the following command in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.\n<pre>DISM \/Online \/Remove-Capability \/CapabilityName:Windows.Client.ShellComponents~~~~0.0.1.0<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restart<\/strong> Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Then, run the following command to reinstall the\n<pre>DISM \/Online \/Add-Capability \/CapabilityName:Windows.Client.ShellComponents~~~~0.0.1.0<\/pre>\n<p>You should see the following output when the command finishes execution:<\/p>\n<pre>[==========================100.0%==========================]\nThe operation completed successfully.<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Reinstall Snip &amp; Sketch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, reinstall Snip &amp; Sketch using <strong>PowerShell<\/strong>.
