Clean boot is nothing but starting Windows without 3rd party services and startup programs. This procedure is done to find out the which program, service or a module is causing a specific problem in Windows. Once you narrow down the offending program or module, remove the program, and enable all other items that you&#8217;ve disabled earlier, to come out from clean boot to normal state.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><i>(Microsoft has a nice article on this topic <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/929135\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to perform a clean boot in Windows<\/a>, which instructs how to do a clean boot using the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) in Windows. This post tells you how to clean boot using the excellent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-in\/sysinternals\/bb963902.aspx?f=255&#038;MSPPError=-2147217396\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autoruns<\/a> utility from Windows SysInternals. Autoruns is even better as it allows you to eliminate additional components, such as 3rd party shell extensions and scheduled tasks etc.)<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>How to Clean Boot Windows Using Autoruns?<\/h2>\n<p><b>Procedure<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#step1\">Preliminary Steps<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#step2\">Disable Startup Entries<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#step3\">Disable 3rd party shell extensions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#step4\">Disable 3rd party services<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> Following this procedure, you may need to restart Windows multiple times until you narrow down the program causing the problem. After completing each step (except for step #1), restart Windows and see if the problem persists. If that doesn&#8217;t help, proceed to next step and restart again. If the procedure in a step solves the problem, you <u>don&#8217;t need to<\/u> proceed to the next step.<\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"step1\"><\/a>#1 Preliminary Steps: Create Restore Point and configure Autoruns<\/h3>\n<p>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-restore-protection-point-rollback-windows\/\">create a Restore point<\/a>. Then download <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-in\/sysinternals\/bb963902.aspx?f=255&#038;MSPPError=-2147217396\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autoruns<\/a>. Right-click Autoruns.exe and choose <b>Run as Administrator<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>From the Options menu, enable the option <b>Hide Microsoft Entries<\/b>. This is to make sure you don&#8217;t accidentally remove any standard or Microsoft entries using this utility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/cleanboot\/cleanboot2.png\" width=\"416\" height=\"248\"><\/p>\n<p>Autoruns starts scanning automatically. If it doesn&#8217;t, refresh the view by clicking the Refresh button in the toolbar.<\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"step2\"><\/a>#2 Disable Startup Entries<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/cleanboot\/cleanboot3.png\" width=\"598\" height=\"352\"><\/p>\n<p>Click the Logon tab, and uncheck all<font color=\"#FF0000\">*<\/font> the entries displayed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><font color=\"#FF0000\"><b>*Special Note &#8211; Important<\/b><\/font>: The Autorun entry &quot;Userinit&quot; (Description: <b>Userinit Logon Application<\/b>) doesn&#8217;t usually appear in the Logon tab if you Hide Microsoft or Windows Entries. In case it appears (in a malware-infested system) even if &#8220;Hide Microsoft entries&#8221; and\/or &#8220;Hide Windows entries&#8221; are enabled in the Options menu, <u>DO NOT uncheck or delete the Userinit entry<\/u>. Fixing the &quot;Userinit&quot; requires special care. This is very important.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autoruns-userinit.png\" width=\"407\" height=\"42\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><a name=\"step3\"><\/a>#3 Disable 3rd Party Shell Extensions<\/h3>\n<p>Click the Explorer tab, and disable all shell extensions displayed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/cleanboot\/cleanboot4.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"322\"><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"step4\"><\/a>#4 Disable 3rd Party Services<\/h3>\n<p>Click the Services tab, and uncheck all the 3rd party services listed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/cleanboot\/cleanboot5.png\" width=\"599\" height=\"336\"><\/p>\n<h2>Narrow Down the Offending Program, Service or Module<\/h2>\n<p>If disabling all 3rd party services and rebooting Windows help you resolve a problem, the next step is narrow down the *particular* service causing the problem. To find it out, re-enable first half of the services and restart Windows. If the problem doesn&#8217;t re-occur, re-enable half of the services from the lower half (i.e. half of the lower half).<\/p>\n<p>Repeat these steps until you find out which item is causing the problem. Use the same logic for startup programs and shell extensions; but note that for startup programs and shell extensions, you <u>don&#8217;t need to<\/u> restart Windows&#8230; logging off and logging back on should be sufficient.<\/p>\n<h2>Revert back to Normal state<\/h2>\n<p>Once you find the item causing the problem, remove or disable it. Enable all other items and restart Windows.
