Print Management is a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in that lets you install, view, and manage all printers on your local computer or the network. You can add or <a title=\"How to Completely Remove Old Printers in Windows 10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-old-printers-add-printer-list-windows-10\/\">delete printer driver packages<\/a>, manage the <a title=\"How to Cancel or Delete a Stuck Print Job and Clear Paper Jam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/cancel-stuck-print-job-queue-clearing-spool-folder\/\">print queue<\/a>, and do much more.<\/p>\n<p>This issue can occur in Windows 10\/11 Professional or Enterprise edition. Note that the Print Management console is <strong>not available<\/strong> on Home editions of Windows. If you&#8217;re using Windows Home Edition, this article <strong>doesn&#8217;t apply<\/strong> to you.<\/p>\n<p>The Print Management shortcut may be missing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/restore-admin-tools-shortcuts-windows-10\/\">Administrative Tools folder<\/a>. And, when you attempt to run <code>printmanagement.msc<\/code> directly, you&#8217;ll see the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows cannot find 'printmanagement.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/pre>\n<p>Also, copying the file <code>printmanagement.msc<\/code> file from another Windows 10 computer and running it would cause the error &#8220;couldn&#8217;t load the snap-in&#8221; since the <a href=\"#files\">supporting files<\/a> are missing from the computer.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>Since Windows 10 v2004, many built-in components have been made into optional features. Microsoft calls this as Feature-on-Demand (FOD). Other programs that were made into optional components are Notepad, Paint, WordPad, etc. This Feature on Demand package includes the Print Management Console, enabling the management of printers, printer drivers, and printer servers.<\/p>\n<pre>Feature: Print Management Console\n\nCapability Name: Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0\nSample package name: Microsoft-Windows-Printing-PMCPPC-FoD-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab\nInstall size: 2.50 MB\nSatellites: Yes\nAvailability: Windows 10, version 2004 and later<\/pre>\n<p>It&#8217;s straightforward to add or reinstall the optional features (FOD) via the Settings app.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/notepad-does-not-open-in-windows-10-reinstall\/\">[Fix] Notepad does not open in Windows 10<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Restore Missing &#8220;Print Management&#8221; Console<\/h2>\n<p>To restore the missing &#8220;Print Management&#8221; MMC console in Windows 10 or 11, use one of the following methods.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Bypass WSUS Server Temporarily<\/h3>\n<p>On a computer connected to the domain, the client systems would be configured to use a WSUS server (instead of the public Windows Update server) to install updates. You need to temporarily bypass the WSUS server to install optional features like Print Management Console, RSAT Tools, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/error-0x800f0954-net-framework-3-5-optional-feature-dism\/\">.Net Framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To bypass the WSUS server for installing features or updates, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, and click Run<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>regedit.exe<\/code> and click OK<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following registry key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\\AU<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>On the right pane, if the value named <strong><code>UseWUServer<\/code><\/strong> exists, set its data to <code>0<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor<\/li>\n<li>Launch <code>services.msc<\/code> and restart the Windows Update service.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> The above policy setting will be reverted back (set to &#8220;1&#8221;) by the domain GPO when you restart Windows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<strong>Automate the above, using PowerShell (admin)<\/strong><br \/>\nHere are the PowerShell commands to automate the following steps:<\/p>\n<pre>Set-ItemProperty -Path \"HKLM:\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\\AU\" -Name \"UseWUServer\" -Value 0\nRestart-Service wuauserv\nAdd-WindowsCapability \u2013Online -Name NetFx3~~~~\n<\/pre>\n<p><strong>What it does:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set &#8220;<code>UseWUServer<\/code>&#8221; registry setting to <code>0<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the Print Management console.<\/li>\n<li>Restart the Windows Update service<\/li>\n<li>Install the Print Management console.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>The above steps prevent the following errors (<code>0x800f081f<\/code> and <code>0x800F0954<\/code>) when installing optional components.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: 0x800f081f\nThe source files could not be found.\nUse the \"Source\" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see https:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?LinkId=243077.<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: 0x800f0954\nDISM failed. No operation was performed.\nFor more information, review the log file.<\/pre>\n<p>If you&#8217;re still seeing errors when using DISM or Windows Features, apply the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">registry fix<\/a> and restart the Windows Update service:<\/p>\n<pre>\nWindows Registry Editor Version 5.00\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate\\AU]\n\"UseWUServer\"=dword:00000000\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Servicing]\n\"RepairContentServerSource\"=-\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\WindowsUpdate]\n\"DoNotConnectToWindowsUpdateInternetLocations\"=-\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Servicing]\n\"LocalSourcePath\"=-\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Servicing]\n\"UseWindowsUpdate\"=-\n<\/pre>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Install &#8220;Print Management Console&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Now, attempt to install the Print Management console using one of these options.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Using Windows Features in Settings<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, Settings, System, and click Optional features<\/li>\n<li>In the Optional Features page, locate Print Management Console from the list. If the list is too lengthy, you can search using the search bar at the top of the page.<\/li>\n<li>Select Print Management Console, and click Uninstall.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/printmgmt-console-3.png\" alt=\"print management console missing\" width=\"699\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"newline\">(<em><strong>Note:<\/strong> If &#8220;Print Management Console&#8221; is missing from the list, then continue from Step 4.<\/em>)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once Print Management Console is uninstalled, click on the <strong>Add a feature<\/strong> button at the top of the Optional Features page.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>print<\/code> in the search bar. Select the Print Management Console checkbox from the list, and click on the Install button.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/printmgmt-console-2.png\" alt=\"print management console missing\" width=\"731\" height=\"272\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This procedure reinstalls Print Management.<\/p>\n<p>If  &#8220;Print Management Console&#8221; is not on the list of available features or you prefer a command-line method to install the component, read on.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reset-wordpad-notepad-settings-defaults\/\">How to Reset WordPad and Notepad Settings to Defaults?<\/a><\/div>\n<h4>Option 2: Uninstall &amp; Reinstall Print Management using DISM<\/h4>\n<p>Alternatively, you can use the DISM command-line to uninstall and then reinstall Print Management Console.<\/p>\n<p>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> and then run the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre>dism \/Online \/Remove-Capability \/CapabilityName:Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0\n\ndism \/Online \/add-Capability \/CapabilityName:Print.Management.Console~~~~0.0.1.0<\/pre>\n<p><em>(You must run the uninstall command first. Please don\u2019t skip it. Else, the reinstall won\u2019t be clean.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note that the above reinstall procedure requires internet connectivity, as the system downloads the package via Windows Update.
