The Task Manager method is like forcibly killing the process instead of terminating it cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff, a Software Design Engineer at Microsoft, posted a great tip on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/archive\/blogs\/jeffdav\/how-to-cleanly-start-and-stop-explorer-exe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">cleanly start and stop explorer.exe<\/a> in Windows XP.<\/p>\n<p>Quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you are running Windows XP and want a cmd prompt with no strange environment variables set, do the following: Ctrl + Shift+Esc \u2192 File \u2192 Ctrl + New Task (Run&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>This will open a cmd window with only the basics. This is useful if you have killed Explorer and need to restart it. This is using a hidden GUI option that\u2019s present in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Start menu.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden option named <b>E<u>x<\/u>it Explorer<\/b> shows up when you follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>Click the Start button. Press and <b>hold<\/b> the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> &amp; <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> keys and right-click on an empty area in the Start menu. You\u2019ll see a Popup menu containing the two options, namely <b>Exit Explorer<\/b> and <b>Properties<\/b>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 415px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/exitexplorer.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"84\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows Vista Start menu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Note that the above Popup menu can be launched by holding the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> and <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> keys and then right-clicking on the Start menu power button itself.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 415px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/exit-expl-w7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"160\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows 7 Start menu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After selecting the <b>E<u>x<\/u>it Explorer<\/b> command, the shell (Start menu, Taskbar, and the Desktop) will terminate, and the other applications continue to run. You need to manually start a new <code>explorer.exe<\/code> process by launching the Task Manager. Use the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>Esc<\/kbd> key sequence to launch Task Manager.<\/p>\n<p>From the File menu of Task Manager, choose New Task (Run\u2026), type <code>explorer.exe<\/code> , and click OK.<\/p>\n<h4>Keyboard shortcut for automation:<\/h4>\n<p>To launch the above popup menu using the keyboard, use the following key sequence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Press <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd>+<kbd>Esc<\/kbd> to launch the Start menu.<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>Right-arrow<\/kbd>\u00a0so that the focus is set to the power button.<\/li>\n<li>Press and hold <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd>\u00a0and Shift keys, and then press the <kbd>Application<\/kbd> key.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/appkey.jpg\" width=\"71\" height=\"58\" \/> This key has an image of a mouse pointer on a menu.
