Many freeware programs can do the task. But if you&#8217;re running Windows 10, you can use the built-in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reinstall-photos-app-windows-10\/\">Photos app<\/a> to save a video frame to a JPEG file easily.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Extract a Still Image from Video in Windows 10<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the video file using the Photos app.<\/li>\n<li>From the &#8220;Edit &amp; Create&#8221; menu option, click &#8220;Save photos&#8221;. Also, the image dimensions will be the same as the source video&#8217;s dimensions. For example, if the source video is <code>1280 x 720<\/code> (<code>720p<\/code>), the output image will be of the exact same height and width.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>If you want, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/trim-crop-images-photos-app-windows-10\/\">trim\/crop<\/a> the image, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/resize-images-photos-app-windows-10\/\">resize the image<\/a> using the Photos app or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/image-resizer-powertoy-context-menu\/\">Image Resizer PowerToy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s very weird that for some videos, you see the Save as dialog box when saving the still image. For others, the still image JPG file may be automatically saved in the same folder where the video file resides.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Output file size<\/h4>\n<p>Another issue is the size of the output image. The Photos app is known to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/merge-combine-videos-windows-10-built-in-photos-app\/\">large, uncompressed output<\/a> files, be it a video or still image.<\/p>\n<p>The still image output produced by the Photos app was big, and the <code>TinyPNG.com<\/code> (lossy) compressor could compress it by <code>96%<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/tinypng-compress-ratio.png\" alt=\"tinypng compress ratio\" width=\"695\" height=\"38\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whereas, <code>compressor.io<\/code> gave the following outputs, 1st one was a lossless compression, and the 2nd, a lossy compression.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/compressor-io-compress-ratio.png\" alt=\"compress ratio images\" width=\"788\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/compressor-io-compress-ratio.png 788w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/compressor-io-compress-ratio-768x138.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have any other trick up your sleeve to extract still images from videos natively?
