Fix 2: Clear the SoftwareDistribution folder & Rename the Catroot2 folder<\/h3>\n
The SoftwareDistribution folder is a temporary storage location of updates. Sometimes, clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution\\Download<\/strong> folder works. To do so, use the following steps:<\/p>\n

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n
  2. Type the following commands one by one and press ENTER<\/kbd> after each line:\n
    net stop bits\r\nnet stop wuauserv\r\nnet stop appidsvc\r\nnet stop cryptsvc\r\nnet stop msiserver<\/pre>\n
    This stops Windows Update<\/strong>, Application Identity,<\/strong> Windows Installer<\/strong>, and Cryptographic Services<\/strong> temporarily.<\/li>\n
  3. Open File Explorer and navigate to the following folder:\n
    C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\Download<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n
  4. Select all items in that folder and delete them. However, as a general rule, it’s advised to delete only files that are older than 10 days in that folder.

  5. Switch to the Command Prompt (Admin) window.<\/li>\n
  6. Type the following commands one by one and press ENTER<\/kbd> after each line:\n

  7. Restart Windows, and see if you can install Windows Updates now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
