However, when you hold the <kbd>Alt<\/kbd> key and press the <kbd>Down<\/kbd> arrow, the Run history is displayed correctly in a drop-down box. The same applies to the File Explorer address bar.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autosuggest2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"428\" border=\"1\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auto-complete drop-down option (auto-suggest) disabled<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In case if the auto-suggest and\/or the append completion (auto-fill) features don&#8217;t work, or if you want to disable one or both features, this post tells how to do that.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Enable or Disable Auto-Suggest (Auto-complete drop-down)<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type Regedit.exe and go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\AutoComplete<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <b>AutoSuggest<\/b> and set its data to <code>yes<\/code>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autocomplete3.png\" width=\"479\" height=\"185\" border=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>(Setting it to <b>no<\/b> disables auto-suggestions on the Run dialog and Explorer address bar.)<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>The above registry setting corresponds to the following Internet Options setting.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>older<\/strong> Windows 10\/11 builds, you can use Internet Options to configure the above setting. However, in the recent builds, <u>Microsoft removed the following option<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch Internet Explorer, click Tools and click Internet Options:<\/li>\n<li>Select the Content tab<\/li>\n<li>Click the Settings button under the AutoComplete category.<\/li>\n<li>Under &#8220;Use AutoComplete for&#8221;, enable <strong><strong>Address bar<\/strong><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/run-dialog-autocomplete-content-tab-ie.png\" alt=\"run dialog autocomplete not working\" width=\"699\" height=\"278\" \/><br \/>\n<em>If the above option is disabled, run dialog AutoComplete drop-down feature does not work.<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Close the Internet Options dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/turn-off-file-uri-history-run-dialog\/\">How to Turn off File Path URI history in Run Dialog<\/a><\/div>\n<hr>\n<h2>Enable or Disable inline Auto-Complete (Append completion or Auto-fill)<\/h2>\n<p>To enable inline auto-complete in the address bar and in Run dialog:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Internet Explorer Options (<code>inetcpl.cpl<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the setting <b>Use inline AutoComplete in File Explorer and Run Dialog<\/b>.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autocomplete1.png\" width=\"409\" height=\"169\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Internet Options dialog.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This enables inline auto-complete (or append completion or auto-fill) in the address bar and Run dialog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equivalent registry setting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type Regedit.exe and go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\AutoComplete<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>Append Completion<\/strong> and set its data to <code>yes<\/code>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autocomplete3.png\" width=\"479\" height=\"185\" border=\"1\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After enabling auto-suggest and inline Autocomplete in the Run dialog and Explorer, here is how it now looks:<\/p>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/autocomplete2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"167\" border=\"1\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inline autocomplete and autosuggest (drop down) enabled.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you type a path in the File Explorer or Windows Explorer address bar, the Run dialog or in the Create New Task dialog in Task Manager, the file or folder name suggestions are shown in a list box.
