Contact IT helpdesk for more information.<\/pre>\n<p>Or else, the Security at a glance may show all the settings but may indicate to the user that Virus &amp; threat protection is stopped.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Threat protection has stopped. Restart it now.<\/pre>\n<p>When attempting to restart the service, you may get the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Unexpected error. Sorry, we ran into a problem. Please try again.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-defender-missing-service-2.png\" alt=\"windows defender service missing - security at a glance is empty\" width=\"780\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-defender-missing-service-2.png 780w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-defender-missing-service-2-768x548.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Security providers<\/strong> page would indicate there are no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-defender-disabled-by-malwarebytes-antivirus-protection\/\">Antivirus and Firewall providers<\/a> installed on the computer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18896\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-security-settings-blank-providers.png\" alt=\"windows defender service missing - security at a glance is empty\" width=\"674\" height=\"509\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the providers would be listed normally, but it would indicate that the Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-defender-missing-service-3.png\" alt=\"windows defender service missing - security at a glance is empty\" width=\"750\" height=\"596\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18893\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you open the Windows Defender program (&#8220;Platform&#8221;) folder below, the folder may be completely empty.<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows Defender\\Platform\\<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26848\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/defender-platform-folder-empty.png\" alt=\"defender platform folder deleted by malware\" width=\"749\" height=\"174\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whereas, on a working computer, you should see two folders &#8212; one folder stores the latest platform files (e.g., <code>4.18.2205.7-0<\/code>), and the other folder stores the previous platform update files (e.g., <code>4.18.2205.5-0<\/code>) which is used as a fallback.<\/p>\n<p><em>If the &#8220;Platform&#8221; folder or its subfolders are empty, it may be a handiwork of malware. In this case, the Microsoft Defender Antivirus service will throw the error &#8220;Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified&#8221;. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/microsoft-defender-service-error-2-cannot-find-file\/\">More Information<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Running the command <code>sc query windefend<\/code> to query the status of the Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service would show this error:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18895\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windows-defender-missing-service.png\" alt=\"windows defender service missing - security at a glance is empty\" width=\"700\" height=\"172\" \/><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">[SC] EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060:\r\n\r\nThe specified service does not exist as an installed service.<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt rp\">\n<h4>Related Issue: Windows Security does not open<\/h4>\n<p>If you get the error &#8220;You&#8217;ll need a new app to open this windowsdefender link&#8221; when attempting to open Windows Defender Security settings, the fix is quite simple. Another possibility is that the &#8220;Windows Security Service&#8221; (short name: <code>SecurityHealthService<\/code>) and\/or Microsoft Defender Antivirus service is disabled or not currently running.<\/p>\n<p>In the latter case, the Security providers and the Security at a glance page would show up empty even if the &#8220;Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service&#8221; registration is intact.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-defender-disabled-real-time-protection-virus\/\">Windows Defender Settings Grayed Out and Real-time Protection Disabled<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/hand.png\" alt=\"hand point icon\" width=\"49\" height=\"27\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6419\" \/><strong>Update 2024:<\/strong> If this issue happened after installing Windows 11 (23H2 and higher), please see this article instead.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-security-blank-windows-11\/\">Windows Security is Blank in Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>To fix the problem, set the Windows Security Service to Manual start. And then, restore the Windows Defender service if it&#8217;s missing from the computer.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Start the Windows Security Service<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\SecurityHealthService<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click Start and set its data to <code>3<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>SecurityHealthService missing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the Windows Security Service (&#8220;SecurityHealthService&#8221;) is <strong>missing<\/strong> from the Services MMC, then follow the instructions under &#8220;Step 2&#8221; below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"services\"><\/a>Step 2: Repair\/Restore the Windows Defender Service<\/h3>\n<p>First, run a thorough scan using Malwarebytes. Also, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clean-boot-windows-autoruns\/\">Autoruns<\/a> to manually remove the rogue tasks, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-script-host-error-run-vbs\/\">Run.vbs malware<\/a>. After scanning and removing malware completely from your computer, the next step is to import the Microsoft Defender Antivirus service registry keys.<\/p>\n<h4>Windows Defender service registry keys restoration<\/h4>\n<p>The following procedure restores Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service (&#8220;Windefend&#8221;), Windows Security Service (&#8220;SecurityHealthService&#8221;), and the Security Center (&#8220;Wscsvc&#8221;) services.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windefend.zip\">windefend.zip<\/a> and save it to the desktop. The zip file has the registry fixes for Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 22H2\/23H2\/24H2 to repair the &#8220;WinDefend&#8221; and &#8220;SecurityHealthService&#8221; services.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windefend_svc_1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"136\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Extract the appropriate registry file from the archive. Preferably, create a folder named &#8220;Fix&#8217; on the C: drive and move the registry file to that folder.<\/li>\n<li>Start <code>c:\\windows\\regedit.exe<\/code> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/#advancedrun\">TrustedInstaller<\/a> using Nirsoft&#8217;s &#8220;Advanced Run&#8221; utility.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-46172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/advancedrun-start-regedit.png\" alt=\"advancedrun start regedit.exe\" width=\"541\" height=\"285\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Registry Editor window, browse to C:\\Fix and import the <code>windefend-service.reg<\/code> file via the File menu.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/windefend_svc_2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"311\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Open an admin Command Prompt and run the following commands:\n<pre class=\"cmd\">dism \/online \/cleanup-image \/restorehealth\r\n\r\nsfc \/scannow<\/pre>\n<p>The above commands are to restore the Microsoft Defender Antivirus binaries if they&#8217;ve been erased by malware. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-script-host-error-run-vbs\/\">run.vbs and windowsservice.exe<\/a> malware wipe out the Microsoft Defender executables and services.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Install the latest Windows Defender Platform update<\/h4>\n<p>If the Defender service becomes functional after completing the above steps, install the latest platform update via Windows Update.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/warning.png\" alt=\"warning caution icon\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\" \/>Windows Defender service should be functional now. After the Defender service starts, Windows Update will fetch the latest platform update. Install this.
