Alternatively, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/download-missing-system-files-dll-exe-sys-from-microsoft-site\/\">restore missing Windows system files<\/a> (of any version) from the WinBindex.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In some circumstances, extracting from <code>install.wim<\/code> in Windows ISO\/DVD is the only option possible. Let&#8217;s say you want to repair or restore the Windows Recovery Environment on a computer. For that, you&#8217;ll need the <code>WinRE.wim<\/code> image present inside the <code>install.wim<\/code> or <code>install.esd<\/code> in a Windows 10 or 11 ISO.<\/p>\n<p><em>(For a piece of brief information about ESD &amp; WIM formats, go to the <a href=\"#esd_wim\">end of this article<\/a>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are at least two ways to extract files from the Windows 10 or 11 setup disk or ISO.<\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<p><strong>Contents<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#extract_files\">Extract individual files from Windows 10 DVD or ISO (install.wim)<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#seven_zip\">Method 1: Using 7-Zip to extract files from Install.wim<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#dism\">Method 2: Using DISM to mount Install.wim and extract the contents<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#extract_image\">Extract a specific Windows edition image (.wim or .esd) from Multi-edition ISO<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#dism_extract\">Method 1: Using DISM to extract a specific Windows edition image<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#ntlite\">Method 2: Using NTLite (freeware) to extract a specific Windows edition image<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a id=\"extract_files\"><\/a>Extract individual files from Windows 10\/11 ISO (install.wim)<\/h2>\n<p>In this example, let&#8217;s see how to extract a file named <code>WinRE.wim<\/code> from the Windows 10 Setup disk or ISO.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>Before proceeding, remember that the Microsoft-supplied ISO files have multiple Windows editions whose images are combined into a single ISO.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23727\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23727\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23727 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/w10-multi-edition-setup-screen.png\" alt=\"extract specific windows image from multi-edition iso\" width=\"641\" height=\"483\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows 10 multiple editions Setup screen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each\u00a0Windows 10 version\/image is referenced by an index number. Before we can extract the files, we&#8217;ll need to find out the number of editions available in the ISO and their indexes. Both methods listed below will take care of this step.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"seven_zip\"><\/a>Method 1: Using 7-Zip to extract files from Install.wim<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Download and install 7-Zip from <code>http:\/\/7-zip.org\/<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Insert your Windows 10 DVD and browse to the <code>Sources<\/code> folder inside the DVD. If you have a Windows 10 ISO, double-click the ISO to mount the ISO to a drive letter.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>In multi-arch DVDs, make sure you access the correct &#8220;Sources&#8221; folder matching your computer&#8217;s bitness (x86 or x64). The paths are &#8220;X:\\x86\\Sources&#8221; &amp; &#8220;X:\\x64\\Sources&#8221; for 32-bit and 64-bit versions, respectively.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"newline\"><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> The Mount feature is built-in in Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10. In Windows 7 and earlier, you need to use a third-party tool such as WinCDEmu, or WinISO to mount ISO to a drive letter.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the Sources folder, right-click <code><strong>install.wim<\/strong><\/code> or <code><strong>install.esd<\/strong><\/code>, click 7-Zip, and click <strong>Open archive<\/strong>.\n<div class=\"qt\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> If <strong>install.wim<\/strong> is not there, open <strong>install.esd<\/strong>. This is explained in <a href=\"#dism\">Method 2<\/a> of this article.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As a side note, I&#8217;ve found that the WinRE.wim (Windows Recovery Environment image) file size is precisely the same in every Windows 10 Edition. However, the best practice would be to get a copy only from the specific index folder in the install.wim.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The ISOs downloaded from the Microsoft site contain multiple Windows images combined into a single .wim file. If you have a custom ISO or DVD (e.g., distributed by your organization) with a single Windows image (Pro, Home, Education Edition, etc.), there will be only one index numbered folder.<\/em>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/iso-find-windows-build-version-edition-using-dism\/\">How to Find the Windows version, build, and edition from ISO or DVD<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click the appropriate index number folder in 7-Zip. For instance, if you&#8217;re looking to extract files for <strong>Windows 10 Pro<\/strong>, double-click the folder named &#8220;<code>6<\/code>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li>Browse to the <code>\"Sources\\install.wim\\<strong>[index]<\/strong>\\Windows\\System32\\Recovery\\\"<\/code> and copy <code>Winre.wim<\/code> to the Desktop.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17805\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/extract-files-windows-iso-dvd-2.png\" alt=\"extract files from install.wim esd using 7-zip\" width=\"684\" height=\"221\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Close 7-Zip.<\/li>\n<li>Unmount the ISO or eject the Setup DVD from the drive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Using the above method, you can extract any file from the <code>install.wim<\/code> or <code>install.esd<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/><em>7-Zip also supports the ESD format. That means you don&#8217;t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/convert-esd-to-wim-dism-windows-10\/\">convert the install.esd to install.wim<\/a> to extract its contents.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"dism\"><\/a>Method 2: Using DISM to mount Install.wim and extract the contents<\/h3>\n<p>DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool) tool is to service online and offline Windows images. To mount the <code>install.wim<\/code> file and extract its contents, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you have <code>install.esd<\/code> instead of <code>install.wim<\/code>, you&#8217;ll need to convert the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/convert-esd-to-wim-dism-windows-10\/\">ESD to WIM format<\/a> before you can mount it using DISM.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert your Windows 10 DVD and browse to the <code>Sources<\/code> folder inside the DVD. If you have a Windows 10 ISO, double-click the ISO to mount the ISO to a drive letter.<\/li>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">elevated Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/slipstream-windows-10-integrate-updates-setup-media-iso\/\">list of indexes<\/a> and the corresponding editions found in the <code>install.wim<\/code>, by running the following command:\n<pre>dism \/get-wiminfo \/wimfile:\"G:\\sources\\install.wim\"<\/pre>\n<p><em>&#8230; where <code>G:\\<\/code> is the drive letter of the mounted ISO or Windows Setup DVD.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Windows ISOs downloaded from Microsoft are multi-exition ISOs. It extracts\/maps the <code>install.wim<\/code> (the specified index #) to the mentioned folder so that you can access its contents using File Explorer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17806\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/extract-files-windows-iso-dvd-dism-2.png\" alt=\"extract files from install.wim esd using dism\" width=\"682\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>If you skip the <code>\/ReadOnly<\/code> parameter accidentally, the following error would pop up:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: 0xc1510111\n\nYou do not have permissions to mount and modify this image.\nVerify that you have Read\/Write permissions or mount the image using the \/ReadOnly option. Note that you cannot commit changes to an image with read-only permissions.<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open the <code>C:\\WinMount<\/code> folder and copy the required files from it. The <code>WinRE.wim<\/code> (the file we want to extract) would exist under the following path:\n<pre>C:\\WinMount\\Windows\\System32\\Recovery<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once you have copied the required file(s), unmount the image. To do so, run the following command line:\n<pre>dism \/unmount-wim \/mountdir:C:\\WinMount \/discard<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17807\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/extract-files-windows-iso-dvd-dism-3.png\" alt=\"extract files from install.wim esd using dism\" width=\"699\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>When I ran the Unmount command above, the following error was displayed in the console:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: 0xc1420117\n\nThe directory could not be completely unmounted. This is usually due to applications that still have files open within the mount directory. Close these files and unmount again to complete the unmount process.<\/pre>\n<p>However, since the entire directory was already empty, all I had to do was delete the <code>WinMount<\/code> folder manually. I didn&#8217;t have to run the DISM unmount command-line again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Gigabytes of data are written to or removed from the file system when you mount and unmount the Windows image. Unlike Method 1, each DISM command-line would take a few minutes to complete.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Using 7-Zip or any third-party archiver (as discussed in Method 1) is the fastest method to view and extract the contents of a Windows image file (*.wim).<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"esd_wim\"><\/a>Install.esd vs Install.wim<\/h3>\n<p>Some Windows ISOs have <code>install.esd<\/code> instead of <code>install.wim<\/code>.\u00a0ESD is a highly compressed format whose file size is around 80% compared to the WIM image.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/w10_dism_esd_wim_sizes.png\" alt=\"install.esd and install.wim file sizes compression\" width=\"661\" height=\"108\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the ESD image format is read-only and thus has drawbacks. For instance, it can&#8217;t be deployed using a WDS server. Whereas DISM would throw the following error when you try to mount an ESD file (<code>install.esd<\/code>).<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">[DISM] Error: 11\n\nAn attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.<\/pre>\n<p>So, if you plan to use DISM to view or extract from the image, you must first convert the ESD file into WIM format using DISM, nLite, or any other utility. This is discussed in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/convert-esd-to-wim-dism-windows-10\/\">How to Convert ESD to WIM Using DISM or NTLite in Windows 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"extract_image\"><\/a>Extract a specific Windows edition (.wim or .esd) from a Multi-edition ISO<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes, you may want to extract the install.wim or install.esd image of a particular Windows edition from a multi-edition Windows 10 ISO. In the earlier section of the article, we saw how to mount the specific WIM file and extract individual files from it. This procedure differs slightly, wherein we extract the specific install.wim or install.esd image individually from the multi-edition ISO\/WIM\/ESD to a file.<\/p>\n<h4>The previous sections in this article were about extracting individual files from a specific Windows 10 image. This method talks about extracting a specific Windows version image itself from the multi-edition ISO.<\/h4>\n<h3><a id=\"dism_extract\"><\/a>Method 1: Using DISM to extract a specific Windows image from a Multi-image ISO<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Mount the Windows 10 ISO file by double-clicking on it.
