{"id":1691,"date":"2016-02-27T14:54:15","date_gmt":"2016-02-27T09:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=1691"},"modified":"2026-02-26T18:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T12:40:16","slug":"search-not-indexing-pdf-ms-print-to-pdf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/search-not-indexing-pdf-ms-print-to-pdf\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Search Not Finding PDF Files Created Using &#8220;Microsoft Print to PDF&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re wondering why your PDF files created using Microsoft Print to PDF driver aren&#8217;t indexed by Windows Search and not appearing in Search results, here is why it happens.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> This bug has been fixed in the newer Windows 10 versions.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Print to PDF adds the FILE_ATTRIBUTE_TEMPORARY (&#8220;T&#8221;) attribute when outputting to PDF.\u00a0 As Raymond Chen [Microsoft] notes in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/oldnewthing\/20131120-00\/?p=2613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his blog<\/a>, if the &#8220;Temporary&#8221; attribute is set for a file, Windows Search doesn&#8217;t index it, and you can see that in the image below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-pdf-2.png\" width=\"597\" height=\"737\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you have a PDF writer software installed, open the PDF file that has the &#8220;T&#8221; attribute set, and save the file. This removes the &#8220;T&#8221; attribute.<\/p>\n<h2>Using BulkFileChanger to Remove Temporary Attribute<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nirsoft.net\/utils\/bulk_file_changer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BulkFileChanger<\/a> utility from NirSoft lets you set or unset Temporary attribute (or any other attribute) for the list of files you select.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-pdf-3.png\" width=\"483\" height=\"194\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Add the &#8220;Temporary&#8221; PDF files to the list box and select all. Click Actions, Change Time \/ Attributes (F6), set Temporary attribute to <b>Turn Off<\/b>, and click Do it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-pdf-4.png\" width=\"584\" height=\"361\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Using PowerShell<\/h2>\n<p>This PowerShell command-line, posted by Directory Services Team Blog, removes the TEMPORARY Attribute for ALL file(s) in a folder, <i>D:\\Data<\/i> in this example:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"powershell\">Get-ChildItem D:\\Data | ForEach-Object -process {if (($_.attributes -band 0x100) -eq 0x100) {$_.attributes = ($_.attributes -band 0xFEFF)}}<\/pre>\n<p>&#8230; and Search lists it now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-pdf-5.png\" width=\"462\" height=\"194\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Check if the &#8220;T&#8221; Attribute is set for a file<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Right-click on the file, click Properties. Click the Details tab to check the Attributes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-to-pdf-5.png\" width=\"349\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Using Command-line:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <b>Attrib<\/b> command doesn&#8217;t tell if Temporary attribute has been set for a file; you need to use <b>FSUtil<\/b> to find it out.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">fsutil usn readdata &lt;filename&gt;<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/print-pdf-1.png\" width=\"499\" height=\"246\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>File Attributes value 0x120 means ARCHIVE and TEMPORARY attributes are set.
