However, users may want to sort folders separately and have them remain at the top and files below. For example, the following is the usual behavior.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/sort-reverse-folder-top-1.png\" width=\"575\" height=\"359\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To achieve the sort order you prefer, first, sort by the &#8220;Date Modified&#8221; column in descending order. Then do a secondary sort by Name. This is done by holding the Shift key and clicking on the Name column header. Thus folders remain at the top.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/sort-reverse-folder-top-2.png\" width=\"576\" height=\"358\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is another option to accomplish the same result. Use the <b>Date<\/b> column instead of <b>Date Modified<\/b>. To add the Date column, right-click on the column header and click <b>More&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/sort-reverse-folder-top-3.png\" width=\"543\" height=\"344\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These excellent tips were posted by <i>otaru1921<\/i> and <i>raxmus<\/i> at the Microsoft forums thread <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-files\/how-to-sort-by-most-recent-with-folders-on-top\/78ac9fc6-0fce-4533-8075-88ebc77bcd29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sort files by date with folders on top<\/a>. Once sorted in the Details view, you can change the views while preserving the primary and secondary sort orders.<\/p>\n<p>However, note that the Date and Date modified fields are not the same. If metadata is embedded in a file, the Date column shows the last saved metadata instead of the date you downloaded it. For example, I downloaded an image file where the Date and Date Modified fields show different data.
