Double-clicking folders shows the association error message.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen a few cases where the default action for folders somehow changed from <b>Open<\/b> to <b>Cmd<\/b>, showing up in bold when you right-click a file system folder. And clicking it shows the following file association error message:<\/p>\n<p><i>This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-cmd-default-2.png\" width=\"413\" height=\"522\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-cmd-default-1.png\" width=\"558\" height=\"148\"><\/p>\n<p>Although the cause isn&#8217;t clearly known, all of the systems which had the problem were running Windows 10. Directory association settings had some keys and values missing, and one of these methods resolves the problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix #1<\/h2>\n<p>Right-click Start, click Command Prompt (Admin)<\/p>\n<p>Type the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\shell \/ve \/d &quot;none&quot; \/f<\/pre>\n<p>Press ENTER.<\/p>\n<p>If the same problem is seen when double-clicking drives, run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Drive\\shell \/ve \/d &quot;none&quot; \/f<\/pre>\n<p>That fixes the default double-click action (sets to &quot;open&quot;) and there by resolves the problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix #2<\/h2>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/file-association-fixes-windows-10\/\">Directory<\/a> association fix (for Windows 10). The &#8220;Directory\\shell&#8221; key didn&#8217;t have the (default) entry. It should be set to &quot;<b>none<\/b>&quot; (without quotes).<\/p>\n<p>2. The &quot;cmd\\command&quot; key was missing the value data for (default). It should be set to<\/p>\n<pre>cmd.exe \/s \/k pushd &quot;%V&quot;<\/pre>\n<p>Creating these entries fixed the problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary: Default right-click action changes to Cmd for folders in Windows 10.
