This is an issue in Windows 10 with Outlook 2007 or 2010 installed, and Internet Explorer set as the default browser.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/ol-opennew-ie-1.png\" width=\"417\" height=\"547\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although you click the <i>Always use this app<\/i> checkbox and click OK, Outlook shows the same prompt the next time you click on a web address or hyperlink in email. The Microsoft article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/3094186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">You are prompted to specify Internet Explorer when you click a link in Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2007<\/a> works for a vast majority of users, and this post simply condenses that information, providing a registry fix and a command-line option to automate the setting.<\/p>\n<h2>Registry Fix<\/h2>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/outlook-ie-opennew.zip\">outlook-ie-opennew.zip<\/a>, unzip and run the <b>outlook-ie-opennew.reg<\/b>. This creates the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\htmlfile\\shell\\opennew\\command<\/pre>\n<p>And sets its (default) value data to:<\/p>\n<pre>\"%ProgramFiles%\\Internet Explorer\\IExplore.exe\" %1<\/pre>\n<h3>Using Reg.exe Command<\/h3>\n<p>Alternately, you can simply open an administrator Command Prompt, and run the following reg.exe command.<\/p>\n<p>Right-click Start, click Command Prompt (Admin). Type in the following command and press ENTER:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add \"hkcr\\htmlfile\\shell\\opennew\\command\" \/ve \/d\u00a0 \"\\\"%ProgramFiles%\\Internet Explorer\\IExplore.exe\\\" \"%1\"\" \/f<\/pre>\n<p>You should get the message &#8220;<b>The operation completed successfully<\/b>&#8220;.
