To hide or show the extension for an individual or specific file type in Explorer, you can do it by adding the <code>NeverShowExt<\/code> (REG_SZ) registry value in the file type&#8217;s ProgID. Here are a couple of examples, which should work in all versions of Windows.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Hiding Extension for &#8220;.Contact&#8221; File Type<\/h2>\n<p>If you open the Contacts folder, each contact is displayed with <b>.contact<\/b> file extension.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/hide-file-ext-1.png\" width=\"439\" height=\"406\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To hide the extension for <code>.contact<\/code> file type, open the Registry Editor (<code>Regedit.exe<\/code>) and go to:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.contact<\/pre>\n<p>Note down the ProgID for the file type, which is the (default) value in the right pane.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/hide-file-ext-4.png\" width=\"569\" height=\"224\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Go to the ProgID key, which in this case is contact_wab_auto_file. It&#8217;s located here:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\contact_wab_auto_file<\/pre>\n<p>In the right-pane, create a String value (REG_SZ) named <b>NeverShowExt<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/hide-file-ext-2.png\" width=\"569\" height=\"309\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Log off and login back for the change to take effect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/hide-file-ext-3.png\" width=\"439\" height=\"405\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>If you want to see the changes without a re-login, you can do a clean restart of the shell.
