This is because Windows keeps the files from the previous versions of Windows in a separate folder in case the user wants to roll back the major update (or OS upgrade).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For instance, the Windows 10\/11 feature updates give you 10 days to roll back to the previous build or version if needed. After 10 days, the option to go back wouldn&#8217;t be available as the respective folders are cleared automatically. These are the folders that would be emptied automatically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$GetCurrent<\/li>\n<li>$Windows.~BT<\/li>\n<li>Windows.old<\/li>\n<li>Windows10Upgrade (this applies if you used the upgrade assistant tool)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/windows-old-clear-go-back.png\" alt=\"Delete the Windows.old folder in Windows 10\" width=\"276\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If Windows doesn&#8217;t automatically clear those folders, you can use Disk Cleanup or Storage Settings to remove Windows.old and the other folders. This article explains how to delete the Windows.old folder using 3 different ways.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<p><strong>Contents<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#cleanmgr\">Delete Windows.old folder using Disk Cleanup<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#storage_settings\">Delete Windows.old folder using Storage Settings<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#command_prompt\">Delete Windows.old folder via Command Prompt<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Delete the Windows.old folder (Previous versions of Windows)<\/h2>\n<p>After Installing a major update or Feature update, you can immediately free up to 20 GB+ disk space if you don&#8217;t plan to roll back the update. Typically, the amount of disk space freed up might be anywhere between 14 GB to 25 GB depending upon the bitness of your Windows installation and the number of programs installed on the system drive.<\/p>\n<p>Using one of the following methods to delete the Windows.old folder on your system drive.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"cleanmgr\"><\/a>Method 1: Delete Windows.old using Disk Cleanup<\/h3>\n<p>To delete the Windows.old folder using Disk Cleanup, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Disk Cleanup by running <code>cleanmgr.exe<\/code> via the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) doesn&#8217;t list the <strong>Previous Windows installation<\/strong> option if you&#8217;re not running it as administrator. So, you&#8217;ll need to elevate it by clicking <strong>Clean up system files<\/strong> button in the Disk Cleanup window.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>Or you can start <code>Cleanmgr.exe<\/code> as administrator via the Run dialog. Check out the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-command-elevated-administrator-ctrl-shift-enter-windows-10\/\">Start Programs Elevated (as Administrator) from Run Dialog [Ctrl + Shift]<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"newline\">Alternatively, you can run it as administrator from the Start menu. To do so, click Start, type <b>Disk Cleanup<\/b>, right-click Disk Cleanup from the results, and choose <b>Run as administrator<\/b>.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the next dialog that appears, select the following checkboxes if available:\n<ul>\n<li>Previous Windows installation(s)<\/li>\n<li>Temporary Windows installation files<\/li>\n<li>Windows Upgrade log files.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/windows-old-clear-go-back-0.png\" alt=\"free disk space after windows upgrade\" width=\"451\" height=\"526\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click OK. You may uncheck the other items if you don&#8217;t want to clear them.<\/li>\n<li>Disk cleanup would now warn you that if you clean up the previous Windows installations or temporary installation files, you will no longer be able to restore the machine back to the previous version of Windows. Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to continue.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/windows-old-clear-go-back-2.png\" alt=\"free disk space after windows upgrade\" width=\"650\" height=\"419\" \/><br \/>\nAfter installing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-fall-creators-update-available-now-via-wu\/\">Fall Creators Update<\/a>, I could free up 27.4 GB of disk space by clearing the Previous Windows installation(s) files using Disk Cleanup.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/w10-cleanmgr-prev-windows-installations.png\" alt=\"free up disk space fall creators update previous windows installations\" width=\"375\" height=\"454\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If Disk Cleanup <strong>doesn&#8217;t list<\/strong> the Previous Windows installation(s) entry, or it throws up an error when cleaning up, use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/storage-app-find-files-taking-disk-space-w10\/\">Storage Settings<\/a> (as in Method 2 below) as an alternative.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"storage_settings\"><\/a>Method 2: Delete Windows.old using Storage Settings<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/storage-app-find-files-taking-disk-space-w10\/\">Storage Settings<\/a> (or Storage Sense) helps you clean up temporary files and empty the recycle bin and the Downloads folder at regular intervals. Other than that, Storage Sense also lets you delete the Previous Windows installation (&#8220;Previous versions of Windows&#8221; files) easily.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start \u2192 Settings \u2192 System \u2192 <strong>Storage<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Configure Storage Sense or run it now<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Scroll down to the <strong>Free up space now<\/strong> section.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Delete previous versions of Windows<\/strong> checkbox, and click <strong>Clean now<\/strong>.\n<figure id=\"attachment_8971\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8971\" style=\"width: 706px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8971 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/storage-sense-windows-old-clean-now.png\" alt=\"how to delete windows.old folder\" width=\"716\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Description: These let your PC go back to a previous version of Windows. You won&#8217;t be asked for confirmation.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"command_prompt\"><\/a>Method 3: Delete Windows.old via Command Prompt<\/h3>\n<p>Deleting <code>Windows.old<\/code> using Disk Cleanup or Storage Settings sounds very easy, but they fail to clear the folder in some situations. If they don&#8217;t work in your case, you should be able to delete the Windows.old folder manually with the required folder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/take-ownership-of-file-or-folder\/\">permissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Using the\u00a0TrustedInstaller\u00a0Command Prompt<\/h4>\n<p>Start a Command Prompt window (<code>cmd.exe<\/code>) as TrustedInstaller, using AdvancedRun. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/#advancedrun\">See this page<\/a> for instructions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/trustedinstaller-advancedrun.png\" alt=\"trustedinstaller advanced run nirsoft\" width=\"700\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the TrustedInstaller Command Prompt, run the following command to delete the Windows.old folder:<\/p>\n<pre>RD \/S C:\\Windows.old<\/pre>\n<p>If you get the &#8220;Location is not available&#8221; error during the process, run the following command instead:<\/p>\n<pre>RD \/S \\\\?\\C:\\Windows.old<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3><a id=\"cortana\"><\/a>&#8220;Location is not available&#8221;?<\/h3>\n<p>If you get the &#8220;Location is not available&#8221; error when deleting the Windows.old folder, then it could be caused by the <code>Cortana\\LocalState..<\/code> folder having invalid characters in the file name. The folder remains inaccessible or undeletable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8973\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/cortana-localstate-folder-delete.png\" alt=\"how to delete windows.old folder\" width=\"591\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To wipe out the Windows.old folder along with the Cortana\\LocalState.. sub-folder successfully, you have two options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use the DOS device path &#8212; i.e., with the <strong><code>\\\\?\\<\/code><\/strong> prefix. For example, to delete Windows.old using the DOS device path, use the following command from an administrator Command Prompt.\n<pre>RD \/S \\\\?\\C:\\Windows.old<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>Unlocker<\/strong> as described in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/delete-a-stubborn-file-folder-in-windows\/#invalid_char\">How to Delete a Stubborn Undeletable File or Folder<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Option 2: Using the Admin Command Prompt<\/h4>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t prefer the first option, you can open an admin Command Prompt, take ownership of the <code>Windows.old<\/code> folder recursively, and then delete the folder.\u00a0However, Option 1 is the preferred method.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt (Admin)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Type the following commands and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd> after each command:\n<pre>takeown \/f C:\\Windows.old  \/R \/D  Y\n\nicacls C:\\Windows.old \/grant *S-1-5-32-544:F \/T<\/pre>\n<p><em>The above command is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/take-ownership-of-file-or-folder\/\">take ownership<\/a> of <code>Windows.old<\/code>, its subfolders, and all the files recursively. It also assigns full control Permissions for the <code>Administrators<\/code> group. So, the process might take some time to complete.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Then, run the following command to remove the\u00a0<code>Windows.old<\/code>\u00a0folder completely:\n<pre>RD \/S C:\\Windows.old<\/pre>\n<p><strong>In case<\/strong>\u00a0the third command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/delete-a-stubborn-file-folder-in-windows\/#invalid_char\">fails to accomplish the task<\/a>\u00a0(due to <a href=\"#cortana\">Cortana&#8217;s\u00a0<code>LocalState..<\/code> folder issue<\/a> or similar), use the following command instead, which uses the DOS device path:<\/p>\n<pre>RD \/S \\\\?\\C:\\Windows.old<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now, the option to <strong>Go back to an earlier build<\/strong> should be dimmed out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/windows-old-clear-go-back-1.png\" alt=\"free disk space after windows upgrade\" width=\"478\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I hope you&#8217;ve reclaimed disk space by removing the <code>Windows.old<\/code> folder on your Windows 10 or 11 computer using one of the above methods in this article.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Windows Operating System upgrades and version updates would leave plenty of files behind in the system drive.
