However, in some situations, the pinned shortcuts in Quick access get stuck, and you cannot remove or unpin them.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Quick access sometimes loses track of a target folder if it&#8217;s deleted or moved to another folder or drive, with the pinned item still pointing to the old location.\u00a0Here is a classic case where Quick access failed to update the Pinned item&#8217;s target (and showed a &#8220;Location is not available&#8221; error) after the original folder was moved to a different drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-quickaccess-1.png\" alt=\"quick access stuck\" width=\"558\" height=\"163\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If an item in Quick access is stuck, here are some methods to unpin or remove the problematic item.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Quick Access is renamed to &#8220;Home&#8221; Windows 11 22H2 onwards. However, the methods in this article still apply to Windows 11.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>Use one of these options to remove the stuck item in Quick Access (Home).<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Create a new folder in the old location, and then Unpin it<\/h3>\n<p>In File Explorer, try to remove the pinned item by right-clicking and selecting <b>Unpin from Quick access<\/b> or <b>Remove from Quick access<\/b> (for frequent places that are added automatically).<\/p>\n<p>But if that doesn&#8217;t work, create a folder with the same name and in the exact location where the pinned item expects the folder to be. Then, open File Explorer and unpin or remove the item.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: Reset the Quick Access Recent Items<\/h3>\n<p>This option applies if a &#8220;recent&#8221; folder (not a pinned item) has got stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Open Folder Options. In the General tab of the Folder Options dialog, click the <strong>Clear<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-quickaccess-3.png\" width=\"329\" height=\"94\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This clears the Recent folders list in Quick Access without affecting the custom Pinned items.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clear-recent-files-history-in-a-single-click-in-windows\/\">Clear Recent Files history Using Script in Windows 10<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Option 3: Multi-Select Items and Unpin them<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Quick Access (in Windows 10) or <strong>Home<\/strong> (in Windows 11).<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>right pane<\/strong> or the folder view, select the pinned item that&#8217;s stuck.<\/li>\n<li>Press the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> key, and select another item you want to unpin.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the selection, and choose Unpin from Quick access or &#8220;Remove from Quick access&#8221;.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77720\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/remove-stuck-pin-quick-access.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"339\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77720\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remove stuck pins from Quick access (Home)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/unpin-ftp-links-stuck-quick-access-windows-10\/\">Cannot Unpin FTP Links From Quick Access<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Option 4: Reset Quick access (Home)<\/h3>\n<p>There are situations where nothing of the above methods would remove the invalid or stuck pinned shortcut in Quick access. For example, in some cases, you may be unable to unpin a problematic item using the methods listed above.<\/p>\n<p>Or, in some situations, you may get the error &#8220;<em><strong>A disk error occurred during a read operation<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; when pinning a new folder to Quick Access (or &#8220;Home&#8221; in Windows 11.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/pin-to-quick-access-home-disk-error.png\" alt=\"pin to quick access disk error\" width=\"1031\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/pin-to-quick-access-home-disk-error.png 1031w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/pin-to-quick-access-home-disk-error-768x290.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1031px) 100vw, 1031px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To resolve the issue, <strong>reset Quick access<\/strong> (Pinned and Frequent items) using the following steps:<\/p>\n<p>The Quick access pinned and frequent items data are kept in a file named <code>f01b4d95cf55d32a.automaticDestinations-ms<\/code> in the following folder:<\/p>\n<pre>%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Recent\\AutomaticDestinations<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/quick-access-destinations-ms-file.png\" alt=\"quick access automaticDestinations-ms\" width=\"759\" height=\"132\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type the above path in the File Explorer address bar, and delete this file:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>f01b4d95cf55d32a.automaticDestinations-ms<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Or copy the following command and paste it into the Run dialog (<kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd>) to delete the file:<\/p>\n<pre>cmd.exe \/c del \"%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Recent\\AutomaticDestinations\\f01b4d95cf55d32a.automaticDestinations-ms\"<\/pre>\n<p>This clears the custom pinned and frequent items listing in Quick access.
