The shell folders namely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-3d-objects-folder-pc-windows-10\/\">3D Objects<\/a>, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos show up above the fold. These folder icons clutter the view, and push the disk drives category down below, which some users dislike.<\/p>\n<p>This article tells you how to remove Quick access and also hide the special user folders from This PC view &#8212; both from the right pane as well as from the navigation pane.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<p><strong>Table of Contents<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Remove &#8220;Quick access&#8221; from the Explorer navigation pane\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#quick_access_v1607\">For Windows 10 v1607 and higher<\/a> <strong>(recommended method)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#quick_access_v1511\">For Windows 10 v1511 and higher<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#home\">Remove &#8220;Home&#8221; in Windows 11 File Explorer<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#folders6\">Remove shell folder links from This PC view<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#onedrive\">Remove OneDrive, Network, and HomeGroup Icons<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Remove Quick access &amp; User Folders (under &#8220;This PC&#8221; )<\/h2>\n<h3><a id=\"quick_access_v1607\"><\/a>Removing &#8220;Quick access&#8221; from Windows 10\/11 File Explorer<\/h3>\n<p>Starting from Windows 10 v1607, there is a new registry edit to remove Quick access. The registry edit also works on Windows 11 (all versions), including Version 21H2. To remove Quick access, follow these steps.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>) and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a DWORD 32-bit value named <code><strong>HubMode<\/strong><\/code><\/li>\n<li>Set the <code><strong>HubMode<\/strong><\/code> value data to <code>1<\/code><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4541 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/disable-quick-access-hubmode-1607-3.png\" alt=\"remove quick access in windows 10 v1607\" width=\"649\" height=\"188\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Close all folder windows and re-open explorer. The Quick access section should be gone now. If it still appears, log off and log back in, or simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">restart the Explorer shell<\/a>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4538 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/disable-quick-access-hubmode-1607-1.png\" alt=\"remove quick access in windows 10 v1607\" width=\"650\" height=\"400\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>REG File for the above edit:<\/strong> Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/disable_quickaccess_hubmode.zip\">disable_quickaccess_hubmode.zip<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The above registry edit disables Quick access for all user accounts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>With Quick access hidden in the navigation pane, you can <strong>still<\/strong> access the Quick access home view by creating a shortcut with the following target:<\/p>\n<pre>explorer shell:::{679F85CB-0220-4080-B29B-5540CC05AAB6}<\/pre>\n<p>Or you can run the following Shell command from the Run dialog (WinKey + R):<\/p>\n<pre>shell:::{679F85CB-0220-4080-B29B-5540CC05AAB6}<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/rename-quick-access-shellfolder-windows-10\/\">How to Rename Quick Access Shortcuts in Windows 10\/11 File Explorer<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"quick_access_v1511\"><\/a>Old Method (For Windows 10 v1511 and up) to remove Quick access<\/h3>\n<p>This method works (but with a small side-effect mentioned below) in all versions of Windows 10, starting from version 1511 and higher. The trick is to reset the shell folder attributes using the <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/windows\/desktop\/bb762589(v=vs.85).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SFGAO<\/a> Flags documentation posted by Microsoft.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the following branch in the Registry Editor:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Classes\\CLSID<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a subkey named <code><strong>{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}<\/strong><\/code><\/li>\n<li>Under <code>{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}<\/code>, create a subkey named <code>ShellFolder<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Select <code>ShellFolder<\/code>. In the right-pane, create a DWORD 32-bit value named <code>Attributes<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Double-click <code>Attributes<\/code> and set its value data as <code>a0600000<\/code> (Hex).<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and log back into your user account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This hides the Quick access section from File Explorer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Minor Side-effect<\/h4>\n<p>Unfortunately, the above registry method of resetting &#8220;Attributes&#8221; to a0600000 is not without any side-effect. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/drag-and-drop-not-working-file-explorer\/\">breaks drag-drop functionality<\/a> in the navigation pane. After applying the setting, nothing would happen if you drag a file or folder onto a file system location underneath <b>This PC<\/b> in the navigation pane.<\/p>\n<p>After testing with different values, I&#8217;ve noticed that instead of <b>a0600000<\/b>, if you set it <b>88000<\/b> (0x00088000), you can hide Quick access and at the same time, <u>preserve the drag-drop functionality<\/u> in the navigation pane. The Quick access icon (the blue star) isn&#8217;t removed, though; it appears dimmed or ghosted and not as prominent as before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/f-expl-8.png\" width=\"553\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a id=\"home\"><\/a>Remove &#8220;Home&#8221; from Explorer in Windows 11<\/h2>\n<p>Since Windows 11 (Insider Preview) build 22593, Quick access in File Explorer is now called &#8220;Home&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/w11-home-quick-access-1.png\" alt=\"remove &quot;home&quot; in windows 11 explorer\" width=\"540\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To hide &#8220;Home&#8221; for your user account, run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add HKCU\\Software\\Classes\\CLSID\\{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903} \/v System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree \/d 0 \/t REG_DWORD \/f<\/pre>\n<p><em>Optionally, you can change the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-file-explorer-downloads-folder-default-windows-10\/\">start folder<\/a> to This PC.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/w11-home-quick-access-2.png\" alt=\"remove &quot;home&quot; in windows 11 explorer\" width=\"540\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Despite hiding the link in Explorer, Explorer defaults to Home (Quick access) view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-file-explorer-downloads-folder-default-windows-10\/\">by default<\/a> unless you change the Explorer default start folder. Alternately, you can access the &#8220;Home&#8221; view by running this command:<\/em><\/p>\n<pre>shell:::{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903}<\/pre>\n<p>To revert back to the original setting, run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg\u00a0delete\u00a0HKCU\\Software\\Classes\\CLSID\\{f874310e-b6b7-47dc-bc84-b9e6b38f5903}\u00a0\/v\u00a0System.IsPinnedToNameSpaceTree\u00a0\/f<\/pre>\n<p>No restart is needed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a id=\"folders6\"><\/a>Removing user folders from This PC<\/h2>\n<p>To remove the user folders from This PC namely, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-3d-objects-folder-pc-windows-10\/\">3D Objects<\/a> follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start <code>regedit.exe<\/code> and go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a subkey named <code>HideMyComputerIcons<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Select <code>HideMyComputerIcons<\/code>. In the right-pane, create a DWORD (32 bit) value, with the {GUID} string as the value name. Double-click <code>hide-7-folders.reg<\/code> to run it. Changes are applied immediately. No restart required.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-3d-objects-folder-pc-windows-10\/\">Remove 3D Objects Folder from This PC<\/a><\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"onedrive\"><\/a>Removing OneDrive, Network, and HomeGroup Icons<\/h3>\n<p>You can remove the other extra items in the navigation pane such as <b>OneDrive<\/b>, <b>Network, <\/b>and <b>Homegroup<\/b> by deleting the relevant {GUID} subkeys from the <b>Namespace<\/b> registry keys located at:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Desktop\\NameSpace\r\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Desktop\\NameSpace<\/pre>\n<p>Each subkey (&#8220;key&#8221;, not &#8220;value&#8221;) below the <b>NameSpace<\/b> key represents a shell folder. The ones we&#8217;re going to get rid of, are given below:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\"><b>{GUID} String<\/b><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><b>Shell Folder Name<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}<\/td>\n<td>OneDrive<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}<\/td>\n<td>Homegroup<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}<\/td>\n<td>Network<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In <u><b>both<\/b><\/u> the above two registry locations (one is system-wide, and the other is per-user), delete the three previously mentioned {GUID} keys under the Namespace key.<\/p>\n<p>Log off and log back in, or do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">clean restart of the Explorer Shell<\/a> to see the changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REG File for the above edit:<\/strong> Download <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/hide-pinned-shellfolders.zip\">hide-pinned-shellfolders.zip<\/a><\/b>, unzip the contents, and save it to a folder. The zip file contains separate .reg files to hide or show OneDrive, Homegroup, and Network items.
