The converted wallpaper image may exist in one of the three different locations mentioned below, depending upon the method you used to set the wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p>When you right-click on an image file and choose <strong>Set as desktop background<\/strong> in the context menu, a copy of the image file is converted and stored as <code>TranscodedWallpaper<\/code> without file extension. The transcoded wallpaper is stored here:<\/p>\n<pre>%appdata%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Themes<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/transcoded-wallpaper-themes.png\" alt=\"transcodedwallpaper themes jpg\" width=\"609\" height=\"154\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Type the above folder path in the Run dialog or Explorer address bar to access the location.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All you need to do is copy the transcoded image from the above to a different location, add the <code>.jpg<\/code> extension and use it.<\/p>\n<p>If you used the Browse.. option in Personalize settings to set the desktop background, then the converted and up-scaled (matching your display resolution) version of the image is stored in the following directory.<\/p>\n<pre>%appdata%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Themes\\CachedFiles<\/pre>\n<p>The file naming convention is like <code>CachedImage_1920_1080_POS0.jpg<\/code> where the numbers indicate the current display resolution of 1920 x 1080. POS0 may indicate the monitor number (if using multiple monitors.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/cached-wallpaper-themes.png\" alt=\"cached files themes wallpaper image\" width=\"609\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In case you&#8217;ve set the desktop background wallpaper via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/restore-windows-photo-viewer-windows-10\/\">Windows Photo Viewer<\/a>, then the transcoded JPEG file is stored in the following folder as <code>Windows Photo Viewer Wallpaper.jpg<\/code>, and the file path is written to the registry.<\/p>\n<pre>%AppData%\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Windows Photo Viewer<\/pre>\n<p>Note that the quality of the transcoded and converted (to JPEG) wallpaper may not be exactly the same as the original.<\/p>\n<p>The registry value <code>TranscodedImageCache<\/code> is updated in all of the above cases.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"cpl_applet\"><\/a>Using Desktop Background applet in Windows 10\/11<\/h3>\n<p>The classic Desktop Background applet in Windows 10 shows the currently selected desktop background file name with the full path.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, and click Run to bring up the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Type the following command and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd>\n<pre>shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921} -Microsoft.Personalization\\pageWallpaper<\/pre>\n<p>In Windows 10 this opens the classic desktop background applet, showing the current wallpaper image file and the folder path.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/curr_wp-w10.png\" alt=\"classic desktop background panel windows 10\" width=\"864\" height=\"673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/curr_wp-w10.png 864w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/curr_wp-w10-768x598.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"registry\"><\/a>Using the Registry Editor in Windows 10\/11<\/h3>\n<p>The reference to the current desktop wallpaper may exist in one or more locations in the registry.<\/p>\n<p>Open the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/p>\n<p>In the Registry Editor, there are the keys you need to check.<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Control Panel\\Desktop<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8789\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/w10-registry-wallpaper-path.png\" alt=\"wallpaper path in registry transcodedimagecache\" width=\"744\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Look for the value named <code>Wallpaper<\/code> (Type: REG_SZ).<\/p>\n<p>Look for the value named <code>TranscodedImageCache<\/code> (Type: REG_BINARY)<\/p>\n<p><code>TranscodedImageCache<\/code> is a binary value, but you can easily make out the file path by double-clicking the value and reading the data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another history location in Windows 10\/11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Go to the following registry key which stores your desktop background history.<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Wallpapers<\/pre>\n<p>The <strong>BackgroundHistoryPath0<\/strong> value lists the current wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/w10-registry-wallpaper-history.png\" alt=\"background wallpaper history registry\" width=\"699\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The values BackgroundHistoryPath1, BackgroundHistoryPath2, BackgroundHistoryPath3, BackgroundHistoryPath4 refer to the previous 4 wallpapers you used. This is because in Windows 8 and 10 the current Wallpaper source path is stored in a different registry branch. Moreover, in Windows 8 (and in early versions of Windows 10) Microsoft decided not to store the Wallpaper source path in plain text.<\/p>\n<p>Our reader &#8220;<em>raveren<\/em>&#8221; came up with a script for Windows 8 and Windows 10. These scripts won&#8217;t function correctly if the Wallpaper path contains non-English characters.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"powershell\"><\/a>Find the current wallpaper file using PowerShell script<\/h3>\n<p>You can use PowerShell to <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/4dc635770d5b123f6c1a719326037880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decode<\/a> the <code>TranscodedImageCache<\/code> wallpaper filename. Here&#8217;s the command-line that does the job:<\/p>\n<pre>$TIC=(Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\\Control Panel\\Desktop' TranscodedImageCache -ErrorAction Stop).TranscodedImageCache\r\n\r\n[System.Text.Encoding]::Unicode.GetString($TIC) -replace '(.+)([A-Z]:[0-9a-zA-Z\\\\])+','$2'<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/powershell-transcoded-wallpaper-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"161\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to John Dangerbrooks for the following PowerShell script (supports Unicode) that helps you decode the <code>TransCodedImageCache<\/code> registry value and locate\/select the wallpaper file in File Explorer. The script works in Windows 7 through Windows 11. You may also read John&#8217;s blog post <a href=\"http:\/\/confidentialfiles.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/09\/finding-wallpaper-location-in-windows-7-and-windows-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Finding wallpaper location in Windows | Confidential Files!<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><script src='https:\/\/gist.github.com\/1ac4b846e359458e4cb2c9a0613d026e.js'><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <code>TranscodedImageCache<\/code> registry value shows the original\/source image file name in the following cases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set the desktop background via the image file&#8217;s right-click menu.<\/li>\n<li>Set the desktop background via Personalize settings.<\/li>\n<li>Set the desktop background via the classic Desktop Background applet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are several different ways to set the desktop background wallpaper in Windows. For all other methods (e.g., setting the desktop background via your web browser, Windows Photo Viewer, Photos app, etc.,), the TranscodedImageCache only stores the path of the converted (BMP or JPEG format) file path.<\/p>\n<h4>Context Menu (optional)<\/h4>\n<p>You can also add a &#8220;Find Current Wallpaper&#8221; command to the Desktop right-click menu using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">.reg file<\/a> below.<\/p>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\r\n\r\n[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\DesktopBackground\\Shell\\DesktopBackgroundFileLocation]\r\n\"icon\"=\"shell32.dll,324\"\r\n@=\"Find Current Wallpaper\"\r\n\r\n[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\DesktopBackground\\Shell\\DesktopBackgroundFileLocation\\command]\r\n@=\"powershell.exe -nologo -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -command find_current_wallpaper.ps1\"<\/pre>\n<p>Copy the above contents to Notepad and save the file with the .reg extension.
