After installing and uninstalling a theme or third-party program, various icons in the user interface may go missing or show up with incorrect or generic icons.<\/p>\n<p>Some problems (such as missing icons, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-overlapping-icon-windows\/\">icon placeholders<\/a> showing up) may manifest after the user uninstalls the third-party icon customization program.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/shellicons1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"239\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missing Recycle Bin icon in the Delete File confirmation dialog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/shellicons2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"387\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Folders showing up with &#8220;unknown&#8221; icons in Open\/Save As dialog boxes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This article explains how to fix missing shell icons in various places in the Windows shell, by clearing out the remnant icon override entries in the Windows registry.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix Missing Icons in the Windows User Interface<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s first understand how programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-modify-shortcut-overlay-windows\/\">replace<\/a> Windows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/change-open-folder-icon-explorer-and-registry-editor\/\">shell icons<\/a>. For each shell icon that has to be replaced with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/remove-modify-shortcut-overlay-windows\/\">custom icon<\/a>, a registry value has to be created in the following <strong>Shell Icons<\/strong> registry branch:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Shell Icons<\/pre>\n<p>The string (REG_SZ) value should have the same name as the icon index. For example, to change the Recycle Bin icons, the user has to add two REG_SZ values, namely <code>31<\/code> and <code>32<\/code> to override the &#8220;empty&#8221; and &#8220;full&#8221; Recycle Bin icons. The following image shows some of the icons in the Shell32.dll, with the icon index. The index starts from 0 (vertical\/downwards), and icons <code>31<\/code> &amp; <code>32<\/code> are for the Recycle Bin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/shell32icons.png\" width=\"499\" height=\"224\" border=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/blue-double-arrow-icon-files-folders-windows-10\/\">Remove Two Blue Arrows Icon on Files and Folders<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How to restore the default icons?<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type <b>Regedit.exe<\/b> and press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Shell Icons<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click File, choose Export, and save the key to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">.reg file<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/shellicons3.png\" width=\"548\" height=\"277\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Delete all the values in the right pane of the <strong>Shell Icons<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and login back for the changes to take effect.<\/li>\n<li>If the icons don&#8217;t automatically refresh, manually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/refresh-icon-cache-windows-7-quickly\/\">refresh the icons<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-rebuild-the-icon-cache-in-windows\/\">rebuild the icon cache<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Screenshot: After fixing the registry entries<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/shellicons4.png\" width=\"521\" height=\"249\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are several third-party programs available that can customize or change the shell icons, such as folders, Recycle Bin, etc. The default icons are overridden by adding necessary entries to the registry.
