Also, when attempting to create a folder by clicking the &#8220;New Folder&#8221; toolbar button in a folder or by pressing the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> keys, nothing may happen.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived2\/foldernew.png\" width=\"285\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This post explains how to fix the problem in all versions of Windows, including Windows 10\/11.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unable to create a new folder via the &#8220;New&#8221; context menu, Explorer ribbon, or using the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> keys, it can be due to one of the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The &#8220;Folder&#8221; registry entries are missing (the most common reason.)<\/li>\n<p> (or)<\/p>\n<li>C-Media Audio Control Panel has hijacked the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> shortcut hotkey.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The C-Media Audio Control Panel (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/store\/detail\/cmedia6549audiocontrolpanel\/9N5J8H1HGC92\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Store link<\/a>) takes over the <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> hotkey, which prevents creating a New folder or opening a new browser (Chrome\/Edge) window using keyboard shortcut. Terminating the C-Media Control Panel resolves the issue. <a href=\"https:\/\/zentalk.asus.com\/en\/discussion\/62373\/c-media-control-panel-make-ctrl-shift-n-in-browser-not-working\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Asus support<\/a> has stated that the next C-Media Control Panel driver update (<code>1.0.0.34<\/code>) will fix this issue.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have the C-Media software but facing the original issue, then follow the method(s) mentioned below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6338\" \/><em>You can simply download the registry file to automate all the settings mentioned in this article. Visit the section &#8220;Automate all of the above using a Registry File&#8221; on <a href=\"#automate\">by clicking here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Restore New &#8220;Folder&#8221; option to the right-click menu<\/h2>\n<p>You can restore the &#8220;Folder&#8221; entry in the &#8220;New&#8221; menu using one of the following methods:<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Using Command Prompt<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an elevated or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Type the following command and press Enter:\n<pre>assoc folder=Folder\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/assoc-folder-cmd.png\" alt=\"folder shellnew fix assoc command\" width=\"699\" height=\"77\" \/><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Close the Command Prompt window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>If the above doesn&#8217;t help, follow Method 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Method 2: Using the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right-pane, double-click <code>(default)<\/code> and set its data to <strong>Folder<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/new-folder-missing-registry.png\" alt=\"new folder missing right-click\" width=\"426\" height=\"163\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and log back in.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should now be able to create new folders via the right-click menu, <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> keystroke, or via the File Explorer ribbon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If the &#8220;New Folder&#8221; command in the File Explorer ribbon still does not work, see the section <a href=\"#newmenu\">Restore Missing New Menu<\/a> in this article.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/new-folder-ribbon-cmd.png\" alt=\"&quot;new folder&quot; command in explorer toolbar not working\" width=\"323\" height=\"156\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26997\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/desktop-new-menu-slow-windows-10-kodi\/\">Desktop &#8220;New&#8221; Context Menu Slow in Windows 10<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Other Right-click New menu Problems<\/h2>\n<h3>Create &#8220;New Folder&#8221; creates a shortcut instead?<\/h3>\n<p>Some users faced a situation where creating a new folder from the desktop New menu or by pressing <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>N<\/kbd> launched the new shortcut dialog instead of creating a folder.\u00a0In addition, it would create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-and-delete-zero-byte-files-recursively-windows\/\">0-byte file<\/a> named &#8220;New folder&#8221; that shows up with a blank or generic icon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/new-folder-opens-blank-icon.png\" alt=\"new folder creates new shortcut\" width=\"251\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The above-mentioned problems happen due to two erroneous entries in the <code>Folder<\/code> registry key.\u00a0Follow these steps to resolve the issue:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\ShellNew<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the two values namely: <code>Handler<\/code> and <code>NullFile<br \/>\n<\/code><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20249\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/new-folder-opens-shortcut-dialog.png\" alt=\"new folder creates new shortcut\" width=\"697\" height=\"261\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Under the &#8220;ShellNew&#8221; key, make sure that a subkey named &#8220;Config&#8221; exists. If it&#8217;s missing, create one manually.<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Config&#8221; key and create the following String values (REG_SZ) in the right pane:\n<pre>AllDrives\r\n\r\nIsFolder\r\n\r\nNoExtension<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/folder-shellnew-config.png\" alt=\"folder shellnew config registry key\" width=\"697\" height=\"163\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>What could have caused this?<\/h4>\n<p>Some registry fix you may have employed from the web in the past has inadvertently added the <code>Handler<\/code> and <code>NullFile<\/code> values in the <code>Folder<\/code> registry key. The two values are meant to be present in <code>HKCR\\.lnk\\ShellNew<\/code> key <strong>only<\/strong>. The <code>Handler<\/code> value on your system may be pointing to the GUID <code>{ceefea1b-3e29-4ef1-b34c-fec79c4f70af}<\/code> (as seen in the above screenshot) which is responsible for launching the &#8220;New Shortcut Wizard&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/new-menu-restore-default-items-shellnew\/\">Restore Default Items to the New Menu (ShellNew) in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<hr>\n<h3><a id=\"newmenu\"><\/a>Restore Missing &#8220;New&#8221; to the Desktop Right-Click Menu<\/h3>\n<p>If the &#8220;New&#8221; menu itself is missing,  then you&#8217;ll need to fix another registry key.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the Registry Editor, go to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\Background\\shellex\\ContextMenuHandlers<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a subkey named <strong>New<\/strong> if it doesn&#8217;t already exist.<\/li>\n<li>With the <strong>New<\/strong> key selected, double-click <code>(default)<\/code> in the right pane.<\/li>\n<li>Select the <code>(default)<\/code> value data as follows:\n<pre>{D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The above registry fix also resolves a problem where the &#8220;New Folder&#8221; button in the File Explorer (and Open\/Save As\/Browse dialog box) ribbon command does nothing when clicked.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/new-folder-ribbon-cmd.png\" alt=\"&quot;new folder&quot; command in explorer toolbar not working\" width=\"323\" height=\"156\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26997\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"automate\"><\/a>Automate all of the above using a Registry File<\/h2>\n<p>To automate all of the above methods in this article using a .REG file, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/folder_shellnew_fix.zip\">folder_shellnew_fix.zip<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Unzip and extract <code>folder_shellnew_fix.reg<\/code> to Desktop<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <code>folder_shellnew_fix.reg<\/code> to run it.<\/li>\n<li>Click Yes when asked for confirmation.\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">How to use .REG files (Registration Entries) in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Contents of the Registry Fix<\/h3>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/5f6fa818956d9f1efd2d229658f5c9eb.js?file=folder_shellnew_fix.reg\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>This restores the missing <strong>New<\/strong> menu and the <strong>Folder<\/strong> option in the <strong>New<\/strong> menu in Windows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you right-click an empty area on the desktop, the &#8220;New&#8221; menu that appears may not contain the &#8220;Folder&#8221; entry.
