{"id":1191,"date":"2006-03-03T22:37:17","date_gmt":"2006-03-03T17:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=1191"},"modified":"2024-01-21T22:25:03","modified_gmt":"2024-01-21T16:55:03","slug":"fix-spooler-service-error-1068-dependency-failed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-spooler-service-error-1068-dependency-failed\/","title":{"rendered":"Print Spooler Error 1068 &#8220;The dependency service or group failed to start&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you attempt to start the Print Spooler service (via <code>services.msc<\/code>), one of the following error messages may appear, and the Print Spooler service fails to start:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.\r\nError 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Could not start the Print Spooler service on Local Computer.\r\nError 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.<\/pre>\n<p>The event log may display the following messages:<\/p>\n<pre>Event Type:\u00a0Error\r\nEvent Source: Service Control Manager\r\nEvent Category: None\r\nEvent ID: 7003\r\nDescription:\r\nThe Print Spooler service depends on the following nonexistent service: &lt;servicename&gt;<\/pre>\n<pre>Event Type:\u00a0Error\r\nEvent Source: Service Control Manager\r\nEvent Category: None\r\nEvent ID: 7001\r\nDescription:\r\nThe Fax service depends on the Print Spooler service which failed to start because of the following error: \r\nThe dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.<\/pre>\n<p>Information in this post applies to all versions of Windows, including Windows 11.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>By default, the Print Spooler service has only one dependency, which is the <strong>HTTP<\/strong> driver service.<\/p>\n<p>The spooler service error is caused because a third-party app may have added a service as a dependency for Spooler. When the app was removed, the service entry may have been deleted, but the dependency marker remains. As the dependency no longer exists, the Print Spooler service encountered an error.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the non-existent service may be &#8220;RProcessWatcher&#8221; (by RICOH Streamline) or a similar program.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix Spooler Service Error 1068 &#8220;The dependency service or group failed to start&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the Spooler service error 1068, fix the dependency for the Spooler service.<\/p>\n<h3>Using Command Prompt<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-open-an-elevated-command-prompt-windows-vista\/\">elevated Command Prompt<\/a> (Run as administrator) and then type the following command:\n<pre class=\"cmd\">SC CONFIG SPOOLER DEPEND= RPCSS\/HTTP<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/spooler-error-1068-dependency.png\" alt=\"spooler 1068 dependency\" width=\"699\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-53599\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You should see the message &#8220;<code>[SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS<\/code>&#8221; as the output.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">NET START SPOOLER<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\">\nIf the above commands don&#8217;t fix the Print Spooler service, use the following command instead:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">SC CONFIG SPOOLER DEPEND= RPCSS<\/pre>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">NET START SPOOLER<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Using the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<p>Alternatively, to accomplish the above using the Registry Editor, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch <strong>regedit.exe<\/strong> to start the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Spooler<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, double-click <code>DependOnService<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Delete the existing data, and then type <strong><code>RPCSS<\/code><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Print Spooler should be able to start now.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Print Spooler service missing in Windows 10\/11?<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve accidentally deleted the Print Spooler service, download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/spooler_service_windows_10_11.zip\">spooler_service.zip<\/a> and apply the enclosed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">registry file<\/a>. After applying the file, restart Windows. This restores the Print Spooler service to the Services MMC in Windows 10\/11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The .reg file applies the default settings for the <code>DependOnService<\/code> registry value.
