Another example would be that the system keeps enabling the auto-align setting for your desktop icons into a grid (even when the <strong>Align icons to grid<\/strong> is not ticked.<\/p>\n<p>Or, let&#8217;s say you had added additional columns in a folder and closed the folder. When you reopen the folder, the changes may not be retained, and it goes back to the default view and sort order settings.<\/p>\n<p>In those situations, you may want to reset the views to clear out corrupt settings and start afresh. This article explains how to completely clear the saved folder views in Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, and Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Reset folder view settings in Windows<\/h2>\n<h3>Option 1: Reset Folder Views Using a Script<\/h3>\n<p>Here is a VBScript that will reset the folder view settings in the Windows registry.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note that the script will backup the folder view registry settings (to two .reg files on your desktop) before resetting.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/reset_folder_views.zip\">reset_folder_views.zip<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Unzip the enclosed script file <code><b>reset_folder_views.vbs<\/b><\/code> to desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Close all folder windows.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click to run the <code>reset_folder_views.vbs<\/code> file.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> to continue when you see this message:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/resetfolderviews-4.png\" width=\"494\" height=\"203\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see Command Prompt windows opening and closing, and then the Explorer shell restarts. This clears your folder view settings. The registry settings are backed up to two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">REG files<\/a> on your desktop.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Contents of the VBScript<\/h4>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/3dac53bce545eb7aa2c8464a72e7aca0.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 2: Reset Folder Views Manually via the Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type <code><b>regedit.exe<\/b><\/code> and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following keys one by one:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\Local Settings\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Shell\\Bags\r\n\r\nHKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Classes\\Local Settings\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Shell\\BagMRU<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/fviews.png\" alt=\"folder view bags\" width=\"595\" height=\"231\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Right-click each key and click <b>Export<\/b>. Save each branch to separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">.reg files<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <b>Bags<\/b> key and choose Delete<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <b>BagMRU<\/b> key and choose Delete<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s <b>important<\/b> that you restart Explorer (shell) after clearing out the above key. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-terminate-and-restart-explorerexe-process-cleanly-in-windows-7-and-vista\/\">Restart Explorer.exe in Windows 7<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">Restart Explorer in Windows 10<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This clears the individual folder views, window size, and related settings.<\/p>\n<h2>Resetting folder settings for a particular folder type<\/h2>\n<p>Windows has these 5 templates for customizing folders: General Items, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/resetfolderviews-1.png\" width=\"366\" height=\"501\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To reset the folder views for all folders of a <u>particular type<\/u> (template), use these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the particular folder, say Pictures.<\/li>\n<li>Access the &#8220;Folder Options&#8221; dialog, via:<\/li>\n<li><b>For Windows Vista &amp; 7:<\/b> On the toolbar, click Organize, and then click Folder and search options.<\/li>\n<li><b>For Windows 8 &amp; 10:<\/b> Click <b>View<\/b> in the ribbon, click the Options button, and click Change folder and search options.<\/li>\n<li>Click the View tab, and click the <b>Reset Folders<\/b> button.
