Terminating each one at a time to narrow down the process is cumbersome. To track down the respective app easily, use <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/process-explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Process Explorer<\/a>. Use Process Explorer&#8217;s &#8220;<b>Find Windows&#8217; Process<\/b>&#8221; button (with the crosshair icon) to know a currently open window&#8217;s process name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-find-window-process.png\" alt=\"Process Explorer - Find window process button\" width=\"563\" height=\"138\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Find Which Program Owns a Window or Dialog<\/h2>\n<h3>Using Process Explorer &#8211; &#8220;Find Windows&#8217; Process&#8221; button<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/process-explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Process Explorer<\/a> and run it as <strong>administrator<\/strong>. If Process Explorer is already running unelevated, elevate it by clicking on the File menu and then click &#8220;<strong>Show Details for All Processes<\/strong>&#8220;. This relaunches the program as administrator.<\/li>\n<li>Restore down the Process Explorer window size. Or keep the error message window and Process Explorer side by side.<\/li>\n<li>Drag the Window finder (crosshair icon) button in the toolbar area and drop it on the target window &#8212;\u00a0 i.e., the error message dialog or the application window you want to track.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-drag-window-finder.png\" alt=\"process explorer find window handle - drag and drop\" width=\"750\" height=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49239\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>Process Explorer will select the corresponding Process name in the list.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-drag-window-finder-4.png\" alt=\"process explorer find window handle - drag and drop\" width=\"751\" height=\"559\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49238\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click it and look at the &#8220;Image&#8221; tab to learn more about that process.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-drag-window-finder-5.png\" alt=\"process explorer find window handle - process information\" width=\"610\" height=\"624\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49236\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Check VirusTotal.com if suspicious<\/h4>\n<p>If the executable file name is suspicious, you can submit the hashes to VirusTotal.com (VT) using the &#8220;Check VirusTotal.com&#8221; context menu for that process.<\/p>\n<p>Right-click on the offending process and click &#8220;Check VirusTotal.com&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-drag-window-finder-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"490\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49235\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Enable the VirusTotal column if it&#8217;s not already enabled. You&#8217;ll see the hyperlink to the VT results, as in the screenshot below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/procexp-drag-window-finder-7-virustotal.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"238\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clicking on the hyperlink leads you to the VirusTotal analysis page which contains details about the binary &#8212; Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/gui\/file\/293ca44fce2ab3ac1d676142b2624e951bbcbf0f18e1a12801e2e9c5f692e90f\/details\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sample link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(1\/70) in the above example means 1 scanner (out of the total 70 scanners) has classified the executable as malware.
