Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.<\/pre>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20014\" style=\"width: 548px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20014 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/explorer-error-app-association-1.png\" alt=\"file explorer shortcut association error\" width=\"558\" height=\"133\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windows 10: File Explorer Pinned Taskbar shortcut error.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And the same error occurs when using the Win + E shortcut or running <code>explorer.exe<\/code> manually.<\/p>\n<p>In earlier Operating Systems (e.g., Windows 8 and below), the following error is displayed:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel.<\/pre>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-expl-err-1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And using the <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>E<\/kbd> key sequence causes &#8220;Unspecified error&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-expl-err-2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, Explorer may launch correctly when including additional switches such as <code>\/e<\/code> or <code>\/n<\/code> with explorer.exe, or double-click the <b>This PC<\/b> icon. Also, all other shortcuts for other applications Pinned to the Taskbar may work fine, thus implying that this is not a Shortcut (.lnk) file association problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>This problem occurs due to missing data in the <code>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folders<\/code> registry key. The File Explorer pinned shortcut located at the following path is a special shortcut that references a value under the &#8220;Folder&#8221; registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch\\User Pinned\\TaskBar<\/pre>\n<p>Information in this article applies to Windows Vista through Windows 10.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix for File Explorer shortcut association error<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the File Explorer shortcut association error, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\shell\\opennewwindow\\command<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a new String value (REG_SZ) named <code>DelegateExecute<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Set its value data to <code>{11dbb47c-a525-400b-9e80-a54615a090c0}<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Repeat steps #3 &amp; 4 under the following registry key as well:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\shell\\explore\\command<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>The &#8220;Opennewwindow&#8221; branch is missing?<\/h3>\n<p>Some users have indicated that the entire key <code>opennewwindow<\/code> has been deleted from their computer.\u00a0If the <code>opennewwindow<\/code> key is entirely missing, then download the &#8220;Folder&#8221;\u00a0association registry fix for your Operating System from the links provided below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/fileasso\/folder_fix_w11.zip\">Windows 11<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/file-association-fixes-windows-10\/\">Windows 10<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-8\/\">Windows 8<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7\/\">Windows 7<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unzip the file and run the enclosed .reg file.
