In some cases, the issue may occur even if you&#8217;re using the Windows default icons for the Recycle Bin.<\/p>\n<p>There are two variations of the problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When using the Windows default icons for the Recycle Bin, Recycle Bin would either be stuck on the empty icon or the full icon, but the icon updates correctly when you press the <kbd>F5<\/kbd> button on the keyboard.<\/li>\n<li>Another variation is that the Recycle Bin icon does not refresh automatically only when using custom icon files for Recycle Bin (Full) and Recycle Bin (Empty).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This post mentions the solution for the Recycle Bin icon refresh problem for all versions of Windows, including Windows 10\/11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>[Solution] Recycle Bin Icon Does Not Refresh Correctly<\/h2>\n<h3>Fix #1: If you&#8217;re using custom icons for Recycle Bin<\/h3>\n<p>To fix the Recycle Bin icon not refreshing automatically when using custom icons, perform the following registry edit.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type <code>regedit.exe<\/code> and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\CLSID\\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\\DefaultIcon<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, append a comma followed by a 0 (&#8220;<strong><code>,0<\/code><\/strong>&#8220;) after the icon file path.For example, if your custom icon path is:\n<pre>d:\\icons\\custom\\empty.ico<\/pre>\n<p>Change that to:<\/p>\n<pre>d:\\icons\\custom\\empty.ico,0<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the same for the icon file path for the &#8220;full&#8221; Recycle Bin icon.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/w7-rbin-custicon-1.png\" alt=\"recycle bin does not refresh\" width=\"575\" height=\"216\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Fix your theme file<\/h4>\n<p>If you&#8217;re distributing a theme and using custom .ico files in the theme, you may want to update your Theme file (.theme) so that the Recycle Bin custom icon file paths end with the trailing <code>,0<\/code><\/p>\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>; Recycle Bin - SHIDI_RECYCLERFULL SHIDI_RECYCLER\r\n[CLSID\\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\\DefaultIcon]\r\nFull=doc.ico,0\r\nEmpty=empty.ico,0<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Fix #2: If you&#8217;re using the Windows default icons for Recycle Bin<\/h3>\n<p>If the Recycle Bin doesn&#8217;t update or refresh automatically, even if using the default icons for empty and full bins, see if resetting the icons using the <strong>Change desktop icons<\/strong> dialog helps.<\/p>\n<h4>Reset or Change the Recycle Bin icons<\/h4>\n<p>For Windows 10:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click Desktop \u2192 Personalize \u2192 Themes \u2192 <strong>Desktop icon settings<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Windows 7:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click on the Desktop \u2192 Personalize \u2192 <strong>Change desktop icons<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/w7-rbin-custicon-2.png\" alt=\"recycle bin does not refresh\" width=\"316\" height=\"276\" \/><\/li>\n<li>To restore the default icons, select the item and click the <strong>Restore Default<\/strong> button.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/w7-rbin-custicon-3.png\" alt=\"recycle bin does not refresh\" width=\"382\" height=\"317\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To assign custom icons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select the Recycle Bin (full) icon, click <strong>Change Icon,<\/strong>\u00a0and point to a custom icon file.<\/li>\n<li>Select the Recycle Bin (empty) icon, click <strong>Change Icon,<\/strong> and point to a custom icon file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another way to open the Change desktop icons dialog is by running the command <code><strong>control desk.cpl,,0<\/strong><\/code> from the Run dialog. Works in all versions of Windows, including Windows 10\/11.<\/p>\n<h4>Reset the Recycle bin icon using Registry fix<\/h4>\n<p>To reset the Recycle Bin Full &amp; Empty icons in the registry to Windows default values:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/recycle_bin_icon.zip\">recycle_bin_icon.zip<\/a>, and extract the contents to a folder.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click recycle_bin_icon.reg to run it.<\/li>\n<li>Click Yes when asked for confirmation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The registry fix applies to Windows Vista through Windows 10\/11.
