The malware scans turned out to be normal and there are no processes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/view-resources-usage-each-service-svchost-windows-10\/\">consuming<\/a> huge CPU time or memory. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/program-constantly-writing-hard-disk-io\/\">disk usage<\/a> remained at 100% though, regardless of the app I open.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>System<\/strong> event log showed multiple <strong>disk<\/strong> error entries. Here is one such event:<\/p>\n<pre>Log Name: System\r\nSource: disk\r\nDate: 15-08-2019 17:37:49\r\nEvent ID: 7\r\nTask Category: None\r\nLevel: Error\r\nKeywords: Classic\r\nUser: N\/A\r\nComputer: DESKTOP-3V7LVDA\r\nDescription:\r\nThe device, \\Device\\Harddisk0\\DR0, has a bad block.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-1.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found event viewer\" width=\"1146\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-1.png 1146w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-1-768x369.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1146px) 100vw, 1146px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After restarting Windows, the following event log entry gets added.<\/p>\n<pre>Log Name: System\r\nSource: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power\r\nDate: 15-08-2019 19:28:09\r\nEvent ID: 41\r\nTask Category: (63)\r\nLevel: Critical\r\nKeywords: (70368744177664),(2)\r\nUser: SYSTEM\r\nComputer: DESKTOP-3V7LVDA\r\nDescription:\r\nThe system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.<\/pre>\n<p>The same error occurred for my secondary hard drive (<code>Disk 1<\/code>), and the error message read <strong>The device, \\Device\\Harddisk1\\DR1, has a bad block<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have multiple hard drives and want to know which hard drive has a bad block, note down the Disk # indicated in the event log. Open Disk Management to see the list of drives and the corresponding drive #.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/diskmgmt-drive-numbers-1.png\" alt=\"disk management hard drive number\" width=\"509\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A bad block is an area of the hard drive that is no longer reliable for storing and retrieving data. <strong>Bad block<\/strong> may indicate corruption or physical damage.<\/p>\n<p><em>There are two types of bad blocks: A physical bad block comes from damage to the storage medium. A soft, or logical, bad block occurs when the operating system (OS) is unable to read data from a sector. Examples of a soft bad block include when the cyclic redundancy check (CRC), or error correction code (ECC), for a particular storage block does not match the data read by the disk. (<a href=\"https:\/\/searchstorage.techtarget.com\/definition\/bad-block\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">TechTarget.com<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And, I couldn&#8217;t clone the drive using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/macrium-reflect-is-busy-a-backup-or-restore-currently-running\/\">Macrium Reflect<\/a> or EaseUS ToDo Backup. Macrium Reflect threw the error &#8220;clone failed&#8221; code 9, and EaseUS software stalled at 51% while cloning the disk.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I&#8217;ll tell you how I resolved the hard drive &#8220;bad block&#8221; error.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix: Device Harddisk DR0 has a &#8220;bad block&#8221; Error in Event Viewer<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing I did was run Error Checking (which is not comprehensive as Chkdsk) on the drive. It showed no errors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-2.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found event viewer\" width=\"974\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-2.png 974w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-2-768x514.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next ideal thing any on would do is to run Chkdsk on each partition (<code>chkdsk \/r c:<\/code>), and press <code>Y<\/code> when you see this message:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y\/N)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, I didn&#8217;t run Chkdsk.\u00a0Instead, I ran CrystalDiskInfo utility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10712\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-3.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found - crystaldiskinfo bad block\" width=\"674\" height=\"532\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In CrystalDiskInfo, the drive&#8217;s health status was showing up as <strong>Caution<\/strong>, with the following entries marked in yellow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>C5\u00a0 Current Pending Sector Count<\/li>\n<li>C6\u00a0 Uncorrectable Sector Count<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this stage, any tech support professional would advise you to backup your data and change the hard drive at the earliest, as the hard disk failure could be imminent. I backed up my stuff to an external drive and then ran Seagate diagnostic software (&#8220;SeaTools&#8221;) as my drive was from Seagate.<\/p>\n<h3>SeaTools Bootable Diagnostic Tool Fixed the problem!<\/h3>\n<p><em>SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disk drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate, Maxtor or Samsung disk drive and any non-Seagate disk drive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In SeaTools for Windows, the <strong>Long Generic<\/strong> test failed right away. The <strong>Fix All (Fast)<\/strong> also failed immediately. So, I made a SeaTools bootable USB drive and run the Long Generic test (which said &#8220;PASSED&#8221;), and then ran the <strong>Fix All (Long)<\/strong> procedure which took 3 hours to complete on my 1 TB drive, has PASSED as well. The report indicated that the bad areas in the drive were fixed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10715\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-6.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found - bad block - seatools usb\" width=\"1227\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-6.png 1227w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-6-768x351.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1227px) 100vw, 1227px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you have a Western Digital hard drive, you may use the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.wdc.com\/downloads.aspx?p=3&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool<\/a> instead.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I no longer get the <strong>bad block<\/strong> error anymore on my hard disks (both primary and secondary). Afterward, I ran Chkdsk on the C: drive which showed no bad sectors were found.<\/p>\n<p>CrystalDiskInfo and HD Tune Pro now show that the drive(s) is in <strong>good<\/strong> condition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-4.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found - crystaldiskinfo bad block\" width=\"674\" height=\"532\" \/><\/p>\n<p>HD Tune Pro has an option to scan sector by sector to find if there are any bad blocks. No bad blocks were found, and the Health status said <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bad-block-error-5.png\" alt=\"hard disk bad block found - bad block\" width=\"580\" height=\"515\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Editor&#8217;s note<\/h3>\n<p>For proper diagnosis, I should have run the HD Tune Pro (sector scan) and Chkdsk utilities before running the SeaTools USB disk. Instead, I right away started troubleshooting with SeaTools.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re facing the bad block error, follow these steps in order:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Backup your data first. You may not be able to copy some files that are stored in the bad sectors.<\/li>\n<li>Run the <strong>Chkdsk<\/strong> command (<code>chkdsk \/r &lt;driveletter:&gt;<\/code>) against each drive and partition. This is because the hard disk diagnostic tool may not be necessary in some cases. Chkdsk marks the bad sectors or physical bad blocks as defective, so that those areas are not used.<\/li>\n<li>If Chkdsk doesn&#8217;t fix the problem and you continue to see the <strong>bad block<\/strong> errors in the event log, then download the diagnostic tool from your hard drive manufacturer&#8217;s site and run it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the <strong>bad block<\/strong> errors appear again after a few months, it could indicate that more sectors on your disk are becoming defective.
