For example, the <code>(default)<\/code> registry value data in the following key may be incorrectly set to &#8220;<code>opennewwindow<\/code>&#8221;<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\shell<\/pre>\n<p>Or, an unwanted registry value named <code>LaunchExplorerFlags<\/code> may be present in the following registry location:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\shell\\open<\/pre>\n<p><em>If the LaunchExplorerFlags value exists and its data is a non-zero value (i.e., not equal to 0x0), then this value overrides the &#8220;Open each folder in the same window&#8221; setting. Due to the incorrect registry setting, the default double-click action folders is set to &#8220;Open in new window&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26724\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/folder-options-new-window-2.png\" alt=\"folders open new window fix\" width=\"482\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another possible cause is that the &#8220;<code>DelegateExecute<\/code>&#8221; registry value may be missing in the above location.<\/p>\n<p>These incorrect registry settings force Windows to open folders in a new window when you double-click on them. Let&#8217;s see how to fix this problem.<\/p>\n<p>The fixes #1 and #2 below apply to all versions of Windows, including Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Resetting the Default Double-click Action<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Type the following commands one by one and press <kbd>Enter<\/kbd> after each command. Ignore the &#8220;<em>unable to find<\/em>&#8221; error messages if any.\n<pre>reg delete HKCR\\Folder\\shell \/ve \/f\n\nreg add HKCR\\Directory\\shell \/ve \/d none \/f\n\nreg delete HKCR\\Folder\\shell\\open \/v \"LaunchExplorerFlags\" \/f\n\nreg add HKCR\\Folder\\shell\\open\\command \/v \"DelegateExecute\" \/d \"{11dbb47c-a525-400b-9e80-a54615a090c0}\" \/f<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/folder-open-new-window-fix-cmd.png\" alt=\"folders open new window fix - launchexplorerflags\" width=\"699\" height=\"300\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That resets the default double-click action to &#8220;open&#8221;, thereby fixing the problem.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Resetting the NavPane registry settings<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Close all folder windows.<\/li>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the following registry branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\Modules\\NavPane<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <code><strong>NavPane<\/strong><\/code> and choose Delete<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If that doesn&#8217;t help, download and run the folder and directory association fixes from the following links.
