Numerous cases have been resolved by running the <code>sfc.exe \/scannow<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are situations wherein a corrupt or missing system file prevents Windows from booting normally or prevents Command Prompt and console programs like Sfc.exe from being launched. In such cases, Sfc.exe can be run offline via the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) in all versions of Windows, including Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/repair-windows-10-using-dism-sfc\/\">Repair Windows 10 Using DISM and SFC<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Run the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) Offline<\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Booting into Windows Recovery Environment<\/h3>\n<p><b>Instructions for Windows 8, 10, and 11<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, click Shut down or sign out, press and hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key and click Restart. In Windows 10, you can also open Settings (WinKey + i), click Update and Security, click Recovery, and click the Restart Now button under Advanced startup.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>If Windows <u>doesn&#8217;t start<\/u>, then boot the system using the installation media or Recovery drive to access the Recovery Environment. But it&#8217;s better to check it out using <code>BCDEDIT<\/code>. The drive letter of the Windows\/system volume is displayed next to &#8220;<code>osdevice<\/code>&#8220;.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><em>(Now, proceed to Step 2 of the tutorial&#8230;)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Instructions for Windows Vista and 7<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Configure the boot order in the BIOS, so the first boot device is your CD\/DVD drive.<\/li>\n<li>Insert the Windows 7\/Vista Setup DVD and restart the computer.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>Alternatively, you may use the Windows 7\/Vista <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-system-repair-disc-windows-7-and-vista\/\">System Repair Disc<\/a> if you have one.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>When prompted, press a key to boot from the DVD.<\/li>\n<li>In the &#8220;Install Windows&#8221; screen, click <b>Repair your computer.<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/winre-1.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select your Windows installation, and click Next.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/winre-2.png\" \/>Make a note of the drive letter of your Windows 7 installation, <u><b>as seen from Windows RE<\/b><\/u>.
