The BIOS firmware comes pre-installed on a computer&#8217;s motherboard (a.k.a. system board), and it is the first software to run when powered on. You can enable or disable onboard devices, set the boot device priority, CPU speed, etc., in the BIOS Setup page.<\/p>\n<p>CPU vulnerabilities (e.g., Meltdown, Spectre) are fixed by installing the appropriate security Microcode update. Microcode updates are nothing but the firmware for CPUs which are usually delivered as BIOS or UEFI firmware update. So, updating the BIOS is essential to mitigate or fix security vulnerabilities in CPUs.<\/p>\n<p>If Intel releases a Microcode update for a CPU or a set of CPU models, they work with OS vendors, and OEMs to develop platform firmware and software updates that can help protect systems.<\/p>\n<p>This post tells you how to check your BIOS version and make sure if your BIOS is up to date.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-find-the-motherboard-make-and-model-number-in-windows\/\">How to Find the Motherboard Make and Model Number in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Find the BIOS Information and if it is Up-to-date<\/h2>\n<h3>Using the System Information Tool (msinfo32.exe)<\/h3>\n<p>Launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-windows-10-build-version-edition-bit\/\">System Information tool<\/a> by running <code>msinfo32.exe<\/code>. On the System Summary page, you can see the following details about your BIOS:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bios-version-3.png\" alt=\"find bios information and update bios\" width=\"702\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BIOS Version\/Date<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>SMBIOS Version:<\/strong> SMBIOS is a specification that defines data structures (and access methods) that can be used to read information stored in the BIOS. That&#8217;s the reason why the screenshots in the other methods (written prior to installing the <code>A25<\/code> update) above show the BIOS version as <code>A24<\/code>.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>From the BIOS\/UEFI Settings page<\/h3>\n<p>You can also check the BIOS or UEFI firmware version by entering into your BIOS or UEFI during pre-boot. Once you find the current BIOS version, visit your computer manufacturer&#8217;s site and see if a newer BIOS version update exists. In my Dell system, the Dell SupportAssist regularly notifies me about the available driver, chipset, and BIOS updates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/dell-supportassist.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, other OEMs may have preinstalled a software\/driver updater application on your computer.\u00a0For my Dell OptiPlex 9020 (current BIOS version <code>A24<\/code>), there is a newer BIOS &#8212; Version: <code>A25<\/code> released on 19-July-2019 &#8212; available at the Dell website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10644\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bios-version-5.png\" alt=\"find bios information and update bios\" width=\"798\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bios-version-5.png 798w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bios-version-5-768x307.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>This patch (categorized as an <strong>urgent<\/strong> security update) has firmware updates to address security advisory INTEL-SA-00233 (CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130, and CVE-2019-11091).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/bios-update-flash.png\" alt=\"find bios information and update bios\" width=\"362\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just as you keep your Windows Operating System <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-latest-cumulative-update-info-direct-download\/\">regularly updated<\/a> via Windows Update, keeping the BIOS up to date is also essential.<\/p>\n<p><em>(This article was last updated on December 6, 2020.
