Attempting to start the Windows Event Log service manually via the Services MMC resulted in error 4201. The complete error message is provided below:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer.\r\n\r\nError 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the following errors popped up when opening the Event Viewer and Task Scheduler.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running.\r\n\r\nTask Scheduler service is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it.<\/pre>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-2.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon checking the Event Log service registry key and values, they were intact. Eventually, the problem turned out to be the incorrect permissions for the <code>C:\\Windows\\System32\\LogFiles\\WMI\\RtBackup<\/code> directory. The <code>SYSTEM<\/code> account needs full control permissions for the directory &#8212; only then the Windows Event Log service would start.\u00a0Note that I didn&#8217;t have to rename or delete the <code>RtBackup<\/code> directory.<\/p>\n<h2>Solution for Event Log Service Error 4201<\/h2>\n<h3>Fix the Permissions for RtBackup Folder<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Windows in Safe mode.<\/li>\n<li>Open the &#8220;<code>C:\\Windows\\System32\\LogFiles\\WMI<\/code>&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the <code>RtBackup<\/code> folder and choose Properties.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-3.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click the Security tab, and click the Edit button.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-4.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click Add.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-5.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Type <code>SYSTEM<\/code> and click OK.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-6.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Enable &#8220;Full control&#8221; Permission to &#8220;Allow.&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-7.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK, and then click Yes when asked for confirmation.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-8.png\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows (in normal mode), and verify if the Windows Event Service has started.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/wel-4201-9.png\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Unable to assign permissions for the RtBackup folder?<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unable to assign permissions for the RtBackup folder, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/take-ownership-of-file-or-folder\/\">taking ownership of the folder<\/a> and then repeat steps 1-9 above.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of our readers faced a problem where the Windows Event Log failed to start, and as a result, a couple of other services failed as well.
