Windows 7 introduces a new file format (<i>.themepack<\/i>) which is basically a .cab file that can contain images, audio files for sound scheme, mouse cursors, icons and the .theme file itself. This file format was introduced so that it&#8217;s easier to share themes to other Windows 7 systems. Another format with <i>.deskthemepack<\/i> extension was introduced in Windows 8, which can also be used for this tutorial. Instructions in this post works in Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10 systems as well.<\/p>\n<p>When a .themepack or .deskthemepack file is run, it extracts the contents automatically to the following folder:<\/p>\n<p>%localappdata%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Themes<\/p>\n<p>As you see, it&#8217;s stored within the user profile folder, and the theme is available only for that user, and listed under &quot;My Themes&quot; in Personalization applet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-16.png\"><\/p>\n<p>If another user in the same computer needs this theme, they need to run the theme pack file again, from their user account. This article tells you how to make available a Desktop Theme for all users in a computer, so that there are no redundant copies of theme files in the system.<\/p>\n<h2>Install a Theme For All User Accounts<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ll how you how to install a desktop theme for all users. For illustration purposes, we&#8217;ll use the following themes as samples, and make them available in the Personalization page for ALL user accounts.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>HappinessFactory<\/b> (Coca-Cola) Theme<\/li>\n<li><b>Fruit Ninja Theme<\/b> (<i>this would be in <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/share-desktop-theme-common-all-users\/2\/\">Page 2<\/a><\/b> of the article<\/i>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i>&nbsp;<\/i>Before starting, uncheck the &quot;Hide extensions for known file types&quot; setting in Folder Options &#8211; View tab. (REF <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows-vista\/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Show or hide file name extensions<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><b>HappinessFactory<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-15.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Download the <a href=\"http:\/\/download.microsoft.com\/download\/A\/E\/1\/ae1fd3f4-3d97-4d69-97b0-620e9cecb5ab\/Happiness%20Factory_Windows7.themepack\">Happiness Factory theme<\/a> from Microsoft and save to Desktop. Rename <b>Happiness Factory_Windows7.themepack<\/b> to <b>Happiness Factory_Windows7.cab<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Create a folder on your Desktop, and name it as <b>HappinessFactory<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-1.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Double-click the file Happiness Factory_Windows7.cab to view its contents. Select all files, right-click and choose <b>Extract&#8230;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-2.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Select the <b>HappinessFactory<\/b> folder and click Extract<\/p>\n<p><img \nsrc=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-3.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Click Save. Do this for every file.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-4.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Double-click <b>HappinessFactory<\/b> folder, and create a sub-folder named <b>DesktopBackground<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-5.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Move all the JPG images to the <b>DesktopBackground<\/b> folder.<\/p>\n<p><img\nsrc=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-6.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Open the .theme file (Happiness.theme) using Notepad, and input the correct paths for the wallpaper, desktop slideshow, screensaver, brand logo and other resources.<\/p>\n<p>Updating the Brand Logo image path:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-17.png\"><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll change that to:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-18.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Originally the Wallpaper path was as in the image below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-7.png\"><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll change that to the following absolute path, as we&#8217;re eventually going to place the theme under the C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes folder.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-8.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Then scroll down to the [Slideshow] section, and delete the <b>ImagesRootPIDL<\/b> entry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-9.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Update the location for the <b>ImagesRootPath<\/b> accordingly (as below)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-10.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Save the .theme file and close Notepad.<\/p>\n<p>Move the folder <b>HappinessFactory<\/b> from your Desktop to <b>C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-11.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Click <b>Continue <\/b>when you see the User Account Control prompt. You may have to type the administrator password if prompted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-12.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Now move the file <b>Happiness.theme<\/b> from the HappinessFactory folder to its parent folder, which is <b>C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-13.png\"><\/p>\n<p>Right-click on your desktop, and choose Personalize.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-theme-share-14.png\"><\/p>\n<p>The Happiness Factory Theme is now listed under Installed Themes, which is accessible for <b>all users<\/b> in the system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/share-desktop-theme-common-all-users\/2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\nalignborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/fruitninja-pg2.png\" width=\"334\" height=\"70\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/share-desktop-theme-common-all-users\/2\/\"><strong><u>Page 2<\/u><\/strong><\/a> of this article to see another example, using the colorful Fruit Ninja Theme!<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><b>Install FruitNinja Theme for All Users<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>This post and the demonstration comes from a Windows 10 computer, just to show you that the common themes work in Windows 10 as well.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\nborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-11.png\" width=\"486\" height=\"303\"><\/p>\n<p>Download Fruit Ninja Theme from <a \ntarget=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/is-is\/windows\/fruit-ninja-download-theme\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Themes<\/a>, and save it to desktop. Rename the downloaded theme pack&#8217;s file extension to .cab, that is <i>FruitNinja.themepack<\/i> to <i>FruitNinja.themepack.cab<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Create a folder named <i><b>FruitNinja<\/b><\/i> on your desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Double-click <i>FruitNinja.themepack.cab<\/i> to open it. This theme pack comes with 5 desktop wallpapers and 14 .wav files for Sound Events. Select all files in the cab file.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\nborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-1.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"618\"><\/p>\n<p>Right-click on the selection&#8230;you&#8217;ll get the following warning..<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-2.png\" width=\"352\" height=\"235\"><\/p>\n<p>.. click OK, and click <i><b>Extract&#8230;<\/b> <\/i>in the right-click menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-3.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"618\"><\/p>\n<p>Extract the files to the <i><b>FruitNinja<\/b><\/i> folder that you created earlier.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-4.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"488\"><\/p>\n<p>In the <i>FruitNinja<\/i> folder, create a subfolder named <b><i>DesktopBackground<\/i><\/b>, and move all the .JPG images into the <i>DesktopBackground<\/i> folder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-5.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"648\"><\/p>\n<p>Next, open the file <b><i>Fruit Nin.theme<\/i><\/b> file using Notepad. We need to change the image and sound file paths mentioned in the file, to absolute paths.<\/p>\n<p>Change the BrandImage line in the .theme file from:<\/p>\n<p><i>BrandImage=logoicon.png<\/i><\/p>\n<p>to<\/p>\n<p><i>BrandImage=%SystemRoot%\\Resources\\Themes\\FruitNinja\\logoicon.png<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><b>Note:<\/b> You&#8217;ll need to update the Paths for each and every file that comes with the .theme pack. However, <b>do not<\/b> update the lines that already contain the full or absolute path format.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\nborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-6.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"223\"><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, update the Wallpaper path accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-7.png\" width=\"606\" height=\"106\"><\/p>\n<p>This themepack comes with many .wav files. Scroll down to to the .theme file until you see the lines containing text &quot;<i>AppEvents&quot;<\/i> that reference the .wav files.<\/p>\n<p><i>Note that there is a lot of whitespace before the AppEvents part, and you need to scroll down a page or so.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Update the paths as shown below, to full paths. I&#8217;ve marked the modified lines using the orange arrow symbol.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-8.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"795\"><\/p>\n<p>Under <i><b>[Slideshow]<\/b><\/i> section, Select the <i><b>ImagesRootPIDL<\/b><\/i> (the 3 lines) and delete it.<\/p>\n<p>Update the <i><b>ImagesRootPath<\/b><\/i> value to full path, from&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i><b>ImagesRootPath=DesktopBackground<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p>to<\/p>\n<p><i><b>ImagesRootPath=%SystemRoot%\\Resources\\Themes\\FruitNinja\\DesktopBackground<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/w10-theme-systemwide-9.png\" width=\"606\" height=\"185\"><\/p>\n<p>Save the .theme file, and close Notepad.<\/p>\n<p>Now copy the <i>FruitNinja<\/i> folder to <i><b>C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes<\/b><\/i> folder.<\/p>\n<p>Open <b><i>C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes\\FruitNinja<\/i><\/b>,<b><i> <\/i><\/b>and move the .theme file alone (<i><b>Fruit Nin.theme<\/b><\/i>) to it&#8217;s parent folder, that is <i><b>C:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes.<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all set now. This lists Fruit Ninja Theme under Installed Themes, for all user accounts.
