{"id":1032,"date":"2010-04-04T12:04:54","date_gmt":"2010-04-04T06:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=1032"},"modified":"2021-05-30T17:09:13","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T11:39:13","slug":"fix-error-problem-starting-photoviewer-dll-edit-image-windows-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-error-problem-starting-photoviewer-dll-edit-image-windows-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix Error &#8220;There was a problem starting PhotoViewer.dll&#8221; When Editing Image Files in Windows 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After upgrading your Windows Vista computer to Windows 7, when you right-click on a JPG\/JPEG image and click Edit, the following error message may appear:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">There was a problem starting C:\\Program Files\\Windows Photo Gallery\\PhotoViewer.dll<\/b>\r\n\r\nThe specified module could not be found.<\/pre>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-jpgedit-1.png\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This happens if Windows Photo Gallery was earlier the default image editor before upgrading to Windows 7. In Windows 7, certain features of the Windows Photo Gallery are cut down and it&#8217;s named Windows Photo Viewer. Also, <b>PhotoViewer.dll<\/b> and other files are moved to the &#8220;C:\\Program Files\\Windows Photo Viewer&#8221; folder.<\/p>\n<p>The Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista provides a &#8220;Fix&#8221; button at the top which when clicked would show an additional pane that has the following tools:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Auto-Adjust<\/li>\n<li>Adjust Exposure<\/li>\n<li>Adjust Color<\/li>\n<li>Crop Picture<\/li>\n<li>Fix Red Eye<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This feature was removed in Windows 7, and the Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 7 can just be used to view images. As a workaround, Microsoft suggests that you use a different image editor and then associate it with the corresponding image file type. (REF: <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows7\/Why-cant-I-right-click-a-picture-to-edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why can&#8217;t I right-click a picture to edit it in Windows 7?<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>You have the following options.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Remove the &#8220;edit&#8221; verb from jpeg image file type<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;edit&#8221; verb for jpegfile class was carried over from your Windows Vista install. When you delete this entry, Microsoft Paint automatically becomes the default image editor for the specified file type. To remove the &#8220;edit&#8221; verb for jpeg files:<\/p>\n<p>Launch Regedit.exe and navigate to:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\jpegfile\\shell\\edit<\/pre>\n<p>Right-click <b>edit<\/b> and choose Delete.<\/p>\n<p><i>(Note that the <b>edit<\/b> key doesn&#8217;t exist under <b>jpegfile<\/b> in a clean installation of Windows 7.)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: Set a Different Editor as the Default<\/h3>\n<p>Rather than deleting the entry, you can replace the (default) verb in the following key, pointing to a different image editor application:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\jpegfile\\shell\\edit\\command<\/pre>\n<p>Set (default) value accordingly, say <i>&#8220;C:\\Program Files\\My Img Editor\\editor.exe&#8221; &#8220;%1&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/change-default-image-editor-edit-command-right-click-image\/\">Change the Default Image Editor Linked to Edit command in Right-click Menu for Image Files<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Option 3: Install Windows Live Photo Gallery<\/h3>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-essentials-offline-installer-download-links\/\">Windows Live Photo Gallery<\/a> and run the setup.<\/p>\n<p>Select <b>Photo Gallery<\/b>, plus other Windows Live products that you want to install.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/archived\/w7-jpgedit-8.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once installed, launch Windows Live Photo Gallery from the Start menu&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Click <b>Yes<\/b> when you&#8217;re asked to associate JPG, TIF, PNG, WDP, BMP, and ICO files with Windows Live Photo Gallery.
