To reset the Windows Update service security configuration, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window and run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPLORC;;;AU)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY)<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wuauserv-security-sddl-cmd.png\" alt=\"windows update service options grayed out - wuauserv sddl fix\" width=\"703\" height=\"141\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The above command-line fixes the permissions for the Windows Update (<code>wuauserv<\/code>) service.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Restart Windows for the change to take effect.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/view-edit-service-permissions-windows\/\">How to View and Modify Service Permissions in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Additional Information<\/h4>\n<p>The security descriptor (SDDL) <code>D:(A;;CCLCSWRPLORC;;;AU)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY)<\/code> is the default security descriptor for Windows Update service in Windows 10 and Windows 11.<\/p>\n<p>The above SDDL translates to the following permissions (Discretionary Access Control List &#8212; DACL):<\/p>\n<p>[0] ACCESS_ALLOWED_ACE_TYPE: <strong>NT AUTHORITY\\Authenticated Users<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS<\/li>\n<li>SERVICE_QUERY_CONFIG<\/li>\n<li>SERVICE_INTERROGATE<\/li>\n<li>SERVICE_ENUMERATE_DEPENDENTS<\/li>\n<li>SERVICE_START<\/li>\n<li>READ_CONTROL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[1] ACCESS_ALLOWED_ACE_TYPE: <strong>BUILTIN\\Administrators<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SERVICE_ALL_ACCESS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[2] ACCESS_ALLOWED_ACE_TYPE: <strong>NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SERVICE_ALL_ACCESS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It denotes that the &#8220;Administrators&#8221; group and the SYSTEM account have full control (&#8220;SERVICE_ALL_ACCESS&#8221;) over the service. Authenticated Users have the right to query or start the service only.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Launch Services MMC and see if you can configure the Windows Update service now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wu-properties-grayed-out-fixed.png\" alt=\"windows update service properties tab grayed out - wuauserv sddl fix\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> if the Windows Update service security descriptors are corrupt or incorrect, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-windows-update-errors\/\">Windows Update Troubleshooter tool<\/a> will offer to repair the problem automatically.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Option 2: Enable the service via the registry<\/h3>\n<p>If the registry keys for the Windows Update service have the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-update-service-access-denied-startup-type\/\">default permissions<\/a>, you can enable the Windows Update via the registry.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an admin Command Prompt<\/li>\n<li>Copy the following command and paste it into the CMD window:\n<pre>reg add HKLM\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\wuauserv \/v Start \/d 3 \/t REG_DWORD \/f<\/pre>\n<p><em>(You should see the message &#8220;The operation completed successfully.&#8221;)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Restart<\/strong> Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note:\u00a0You may also open Regedit.exe and set the Start value data to <code>3<\/code> in the above registry location.
