Note the error message, if any.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"rp\">If the Windows Update service is missing from the list, see the articles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/missing-windows-update-wuauserv-service-windows-10-11\/\">Missing Windows Update (wuauserv) Service<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/error-0x80070424-windows-update-and-microsoft-store\/\">Error 0x80070424 in Windows Update<\/a> to restore the service entry.<\/div>\n<p>You can also change the Windows Update service Start type using Command Prompt or the Registry Editor.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 2:\u00a0Using Command Prompt<\/h3>\n<p>Alternatively, you can set the Windows Update service start type using Command Prompt.<\/p>\n<p>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> and execute the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc config wuauserv start= demand<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc config LicenseManager start= demand<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc config wlidsvc start= demand<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc config bits start= demand<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">sc config tokenbroker start= demand<\/pre>\n<p>This sets the start type for the above services to <strong>Manual<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 3:\u00a0Using the Windows Registry<\/h3>\n<p>You can also use the Registry Editor to manually change the Windows Update service&#8217;s Start type.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\wuauserv<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click the DWORD value named <strong>Start<\/strong> and set its data to <code>3<br \/>\n<\/code><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wuauserv-start-localsystem-registry.png\" alt=\"windows update error error 0x80070422\" width=\"700\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>Service Startup types and the <strong>Start<\/strong> registry value:\n\n<strong>0x00000002<\/strong> means Automatic start\n<strong>0x00000003<\/strong> means Manual start (a.k.a demand start)\n<strong>0x00000004<\/strong> means Disabled\n<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, set the &#8220;Start&#8221; value data to 3 in these locations:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\LicenseManager\n\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\wlidsvc\n\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\bits<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows for the change to take effect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3>Access is Denied when changing &#8220;Windows Update&#8221;
