Windows Update Something went wrong, Try to reopen Settings Later

When you launch Settings and click Windows Update, the Windows Update page may show the following error:

Something went wrong. Try to reopen Settings Later

windows update something went wrong

Cause

This happens if the Update Orchestrator Service (“UsoSvc“) is disabled or missing. This service manages Windows Updates. If stopped, your devices will not be able to download and install the latest updates.

Important: If the Windows Update services are deleted at every restart, your system could be infected. See the article Windows Update services are deleted at every restart for more information.

Solution

Start the Update Orchestrator Service

  1. Right-click Start, and click Run.
  2. Type services.msc and click OK.
  3. Double-click “Update Orchestrator Service”
  4. Set its Startup type to “Automatic (Delayed Start)”
  5. Click Start to start the service.

Attempt to start these services:

  • Windows Update
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service
  • Update Orchestrator Service
  • Delivery Optimization
  • Windows Modules Installer

If the above services start correctly, launch Settings and access the Windows Update page now.

If some services are missing or unable to start, restore the missing service(s) from the following links:

“Update Orchestrator Service” is missing?

If the Update Orchestrator Service is missing from the list of services, you can restore it using the usosvc.reg registry fix for Windows 10 and 11 (last tested on Windows 11 Build 22H2.) After applying the registry fix, restart Windows.

Likewise, if other services are missing, restore them from the following links:

After importing the registry files mentioned in the following articles, the system requires a reboot for the changes to take effect.
