Fix: Tally Error 404 – Unable to connect to the Tally Gateway Server

When you start the Tally accounting software, you may encounter error 404 Unable to connect to the configured Tally Gateway Server on Port 9999.

The Connections Error (404) screen cited the following possible reasons(s) for failure:

  • Problem with the Server name/IP address or Port of your Tally Gateway Server.
  • Windows Firewall is blocking Tally.ERP, Tally Gateway Server, or both.
  • Problem with the network connection on your computer.

It also suggests the following possible solution(s):

  • Check if the Tally Gateway Server name/IP address specified in the Configure Existing License screen is correct.
  • Check if the Tally Gateway Server is installed on the computer specified in the configuration.
  • Allow Tally.ERP 9 and Tally Gateway Server through Windows Firewall. Click here to know how to allow any application through the Windows Firewall.
  • Check if your computer is connected to the network.
  • Check if Tally Gateway Server is receiving requests from the configured port.

And the following options were shown below:

  • Reconfigure your existing license
  • Search for Tally Gateway Server(s)

Selecting one of the above options to reconfigure the Gateway throws Error 208.

Windows Firewall

I’ve been using the Malwarebytes Windows Firewall Control (WFC) software for the last 2 months, and tally.exe inbound TCP/UDP connections were already whitelisted for both Public and Private networks.

The above inbound rules are also reflected in the Windows Firewall (with Advanced Security) wf.msc Control Panel.

I’ve followed everything the Tally Official KB said and it didn’t resolve the problem for me.

Tally Gateway Server Service

The problem turned out to be the Tally Gateway Server service. The event viewer showed that the service had failed to start, and the following errors were logged under Event IDs 7000 and 7009:

The Tally Gateway Server 10.0 service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
A timeout was reached (60000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Tally Gateway Server 10.0 service to connect.

All I had to do was launch the Services MMC (services.msc) and start the Tally Gateway Server 10.0 service.

That fixed the Tally Gateway Server connection issue.

Tally error 407 after changing the computer name

You may get the error 407 after changing the computer name in Windows. Launching Tally would throw the error code 407

Unable to connect to the configured Tally Gateway Server on Port 9999.

The Tally Gateway Server name/IP (old_computer_name) specified in the Configure Existing License screen, does not exist in your network.

All you need to do is click Reconfigure your existing license, and then type your (new) computer name in the next dialog.

Save your settings. Tally would have saved the computer (or gateway server) name into the Tally.ini file.

Close and reopen Tally. Error 407 should no longer occur.
