Preview Pane Not Refreshing Preview Image for Video Files in Windows 10

WMP Rich Preview Handler in Windows 10 has an issue that causes the Preview pane not to update correctly. The Preview pane gets stuck with the thumb image of the video file that was first selected, showing the same preview image for other files.

This issue happens to all video file types that use the Windows Media Player’s Rich Preview Handler. In addition, the MP3 files containing album art images are affected too.

I could reproduce this in my Windows 10 system (version 1511) Build 10586.164, and here is a small video clip to demonstrate the problem.

This apparently is a bug in Windows Media Player’s Rich Preview Handler. If you disable WMP Rich Preview Handler, the preview pane refreshes the image correctly, but you lose the ability to play the media file from the Preview pane, as the control bar won’t appear under the preview image. On the other hand, when the WMP Rich Preview Handler is enabled (default), the Preview pane fails to refresh but still allows you to play the correct file from the Preview pane.

If you use the Preview pane for just viewing the preview image but not for playing files, then go ahead and disable the WMP Rich Preview Handler using this REG File (zipped wmp_rich_preview.zip). To enable the preview handler back, run the undo REG file.

Contents of the REG files

Disable WMP Rich Preview Handler

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PreviewHandlers]
"{031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}"=-

Enable WMP Rich Preview Handler

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PreviewHandlers]
"{031EE060-67BC-460d-8847-E4A7C5E45A27}"="Windows Media Player Rich Preview Handler"

I hope this gets fixed in future updates.

  1. Or install an alternative preview handler? 🙂 Microsoft doesn’t seem to be interested in maintaining a bug-free desktop/Win32 components any more.

  2. Not sure when this article was dated but today is Oct. 27, 2021 and this problem still hasn’t gone away for Windows 10 users. It’s not the end of the world but I have no doubt Microsoft has been fully aware of this for years and it doesn’t _seem_ like it’d be difficult to fix — if they wanted to. They’ve just started pushing Windows 11 this month so it’s now just another way to punish those of us who stubbornly cling to Windows 10, despite their persistent and forceful advances. But let’s be real — is there any good reason to think it’ll be fixed in Win11 when they’ve already ignored the issue this long?

  3. Problem still manifest, very annoying. Hope Microsoft will demonstrate some vigilance to finally address this issue. For now migrating to W11 is no option for me, since my PC does not meet the hardware/BIOS requirements for this environment.

  4. 060522 Absolutely outrageous. Bought new Dell XPS 8940 computer w/WIN 11. SORRY I DID! Amongst myriad of other learning curve problems, I now cannot see preview pane view of my videos (actually worked correctly for first two months. I now get the same image view on EVERY different video file. No solutions found online searching.
