The above error (especially when installing KB5016629) is seen on systems with Malwarebytes Premium software installed. Here are some links where the issue has been reported.

Let’s see how to resolve the issue.

[Fix] KB5016629 Error 0x8007054f “Something went wrong”

Disable Malwarebytes Real-time Protection Modules

If you’re using Malwarebytes Premium, disable all the real-time protection modules, namely: Web Protection, Malware Protection, Ransomware Protection, and Exploit Protection. For some users, disabling Web Protection helped. But for others, disabling Exploit Protection helped.

Try disabling all the modules and see if you’re able to install KB5016629.

Uninstall Malwarebytes

If that doesn’t work out, you need to uninstall Malwarebytes from Apps & Features (or Programs and Features) so that Malwarebytes kernel drivers and Service(s) don’t load with Windows. Only if necessary, you need to use the Malwarebytes Support Tool (in addition) to do a clean uninstall of Malwarebytes Premium.

Turn off Windows Defender Real-time protection

Additionally, you may turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus real-time protection.

(Some users have indicated that they had to repair Windows Update and clear the WU caches in addition to the above steps.)

Once you successfully install the KB5016629 Cumulative Update, you can reinstall or turn on the real-time protection in Malwarebytes and Microsoft Defender.
