Error 0x80073715 Installing KB4058258 Windows Update in Windows 10

KB4058258 cumulative update for Windows was released on January 31, 2018 and it bumps the OS Build to 16299.214. If you’re facing the error 0x80073715 while installing the update KB4058258 on your Windows 10 computer, here are some fixes for you.

Error code 0x80073715 means “The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different.” It’s possible that the error was caused by incomplete download, and here are some fixes that may help.

Reset the HOSTS file contents

If you had modified the HOSTS file to block telemetry, try resetting the contents of the file. It’s possible that Microsoft has changed the WSUS servers to one of the servers that collect telemetry.

Start Notepad as administrator and open the HOSTS file located here:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

Remove all blocked telemetry server entries. If you don’t know how to do that, then simply reset the entire HOSTS file, replacing the file with the following factory default contents.

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Save the file and close Notepad.

Restart Windows and try installing KB4058258 update again.

Fix Windows Components Store using DISM and Sfc

To make sure that the component store corruption is not the root cause, fix the store by running DISM with the /restorehealth switch and then follow up with Sfc command. For more information see article How to Repair Windows 10 Using DISM and SFC.

Install the Servicing Stack Update KB4074608

Make sure that you install the Servicing Stack Update KB4074608 first. If it’s not already installed, visit the Microsoft Update catalog and manually download/install the package. This update makes stability improvements for the Windows 10 Version 1709 servicing stack.

Download the Cumulative Update Package KB4058258 and Install it

If installing the update via Windows Update delivery mechanism fails, visit the Microsoft Update Catalog link KB4058258 and download the cumulative update package for your Windows version/bitness and install it.

Still doesn’t help?

If none of the above steps help, you can use one of the following options:

  1. Rollback the system state using System Restore so that the previous update KB4056892 is undo’ed (or uninstalled), and then install KB4058258 via WU or manually.
  2. Perform an in-place upgrade using Media Creation Tool.
  3. Create a slipstreamed Windows 10 setup disk and run a repair install.

Hope one of the above fixes help you update to OS Build 16299.214 (KB4058258) successfully!
