Display Properties Desktop background tab lists only BMP files
Published: Nov 10, 2004Send your feedback
Symptom
When you open the Desktop tab in Display Properties, only BMP files may be shown in the background images listing, although the My Pictures folder contains JPG files. This happens due to two Policy settings namely NoHTMLWallpaper and NoActiveDesktop
Note that, with the above restrictions enabled, the user can still set a JPG file as a background image via Common Tasks Set as desktop background link.
Resolution
For standalone Windows XP systems, use the following method to remove the restrictions.
Start Regedit.exe and navigate to the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
In the right-pane, delete the NoActiveDesktop value if exists.
Navigate to the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop
In the right-pane, delete NoHTMLWallPaper if exists.
