Favorites display the trailing .URL for Internet shortcuts

Symptom
When you access the internet favorites via Internet Explorer Favorites menu or from the Start Menu, the trailing .URL may be shown for the shortcuts.
Normally, Windows hides the extension for Internet Shortcuts. This symptom may occur after installing a third-party web browser.
Resolution
To resolve the problem, try any one of the following procedure:
Method 1 (Use this method only if you have Internet Explorer 6 installed)
Click Start, Run and type this command and press Enter
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dllMethod 2
- Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe
- Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut
- In the right-pane, create a string value (REG_SZ) named NeverShowExt
- Quit the Registry Editor
Method 3
The steps below is applicable to Windows XP systems. The options may vary for Windows 9x systems.
- Open Control Panel, Folder Options
- Click File Types dialog
- Scroll down to the entry URL - Internet Shortcut
- Click Advanced button
- Uncheck Always show extension
- Click OK, OK and close the dialog.
