Q:  Some of the folders on my start menu have their background colored rather than the standard, and I have no idea why. Anyone know how to fix this?

A:  This is a new feature introduced in Windows XP. The Highlight newly installed programs feature specifies that a new program that you installed on your computer is highlighted with a different color in the All Programs list. To disable this feature, use the following steps:

  • Right-click the Start menu, and then click Properties.
  • In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, click the Start Menu tab
  • Click Customize.
  • In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click the Advanced tab
  • Click to clear the Highlight newly installed programs check box.
  • Click OK, and then click OK again.
