However, one option is that the user is given the choice to install AVG 8. This is done silently and does not require any further user interaction other than initially saying YES to install - and all from a USB Pen Drive too :) The above little snippet helped me auto-update everything once it had been installed meaning I could skip the crappy task of manually updating.
