In Windows XP, you can open Display Settings, select the Appearance tab and click the Effects button to configure the Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key option.

Wondering where’s this setting in Windows Vista?

It took some time for me to locate this option in Windows Vista. If you’re a frequent user of Windows Help and Support, you would have found this option quicker than me. Open Help and Support and type Underline as the Search phrase. The first hit shows you where the option is located in Windows Vista.

The setting is moved to the Control Panel, specifically in this location:

Control Panel | Ease of Access Center | Make the keyboard easier to use

The option is now changed as Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys.

    Thank you :-)
Why Windows 7′s otherwise usefull start-menu search feature did not find this, we can only wonder.

And why they chose to hide underlined letters is just mindbogling in the first place.
Microsoft sometimes really have issues with admitting and rectifying errors (hide file extentions anyone? Well it is a HUGE boost to the average virus developer. So lets keep that the default. GAH!)

Windows settings just keep getting more involved in an effort to dumb it down more & more. Thank you for posting where you found it!

Vista help wasn’t. Google giving me this page was helpful, however. Thanks Ramesh for putting this out there so everyone can get back to increased productivity with one hand on the mouse and one on the keyboard (using the shortcuts)!

Thank you very much. I’ve now got my underlines back, having been issued with a new pc at work.

    Much obliged to you.
