How to Remove Libraries, Homegroup and Favorites from Explorer Navigation Pane in Windows 7

The Libraries, Homegroup and Favorites section in the Windows Explorer navigation pane prove very useful for most users. However, if you don’t wish to use those options and want to have a barebones navigation pane, here are some customizations for you.

I’ve put together a set of REG files (See section Registry Fix) for you to automate the task, so you don’t have to perform the manual steps below. If you prefer editing them manually if you’re good in registry, then use these steps:

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press {ENTER}

In the Registry Editor, perform the modifications as adviced below:

To remove/hide Homegroup category:

Create the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Classes \ CLSID \ {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} \ ShellFolder

Create a DWORD value named "Attributes" and set it’s value data to b094010c

To remove/hide Libraries category:

Create the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Classes \ CLSID \ {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} \ ShellFolder

Create a DWORD value named "Attributes" and set it’s value data to b090010d

To remove/hide Favorites category:

Create the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Classes \ CLSID \ {323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E} \ ShellFolder

Create a DWORD value named "Attributes" and set it’s value data to a9400100

Exit the Registry Editor.

To automate the above steps, download the one you want:

After downloading the appropriate file, extract and run the enclosed REG file. If you want to Undo or reverse the changes, run the UNDO file which is also enclosed.

You’ve now removed the Libraries, Homegroup and Favorites categories from navigation pane!

  1. Really great tips! That “Favorites” section always annoyed me but I was (am?) too lazy to do anything about it… until now. THANKS. :)
