Open Command Window Here - Make available from folder tree
It’s over an year since Vista was released, and by now most of you know that the Open Command Window Here is now a built-in option in Windows Vista, which can be accessed by holding the SHIFT key when right-clicking on a directory (file system folder). The Open Command Window Here option had been included as an Extended menu by default, probably to reduce clutter in the context menu.
Since the option was implemented as an Extended menu, the command Open Command Window Here wouldn’t be available when you right-click on a folder from the folder pane in Windows Explorer.
Open Command Window Here - from the folder tree:
To enable the Open Command Window Here option in the folder tree in Windows Explorer, you need to remove a registry value named Extended. To do so, you can use the .reg file cmd-always.reg. Download cmd-always.reg and save it to the Desktop. Right-click cmd-always.reg and choose Merge. Click Yes when asked for confirmation.
Manual registry edit
To accomplish this manually, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type Regedit.exe
2. Navigate to the following location:
3. Backup the branch (Click File, Export, and save to a .REG file)
4. In the right-pane, delete the value named Extended
5. Repeat the same in this branch (for Drives):
6. Exit the Registry Editor.
Now, you’ll note two changes:
- Open Command Window Here is a standard option for file system folders and drives. i.e., You can access the option without using the SHIFT button.
- Open Command Window Here is available when you right-click on a folder or drive from the folder tree in Windows Explorer.
