Microsoft Security Essentials Upgrade notification popped up when I switched on the computer today.

Clicked the Upgrade now button and allowed the process to elevate.

Note that the definition updates weren’t automatically updated, and when I tried to update it manually, error 0×80240016 popped up informing me that a system restart is pending.

Rebooted and updated the definitions (1.77.691) via MSE’s Update tab.

It appears that the version 1.0.1961.0 was released on Feb 26 and also an unofficial announcement was posted in the Microsoft Communities.

I wonder why the upgrade dialog popped up after 10+ days from the date the upgrade was actually released.

Ramesh, your situation is very strange. I upgraded immediately after the release. My computer required no restart. Definition update came and got installed without any problem. Same goes for my father’s netbook. (Although his was not connected to Internet until two days later but the situation was the same).

I conclude that there is something wrong with your computer or your Internet connection.
