Fix Services MMC Error “One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed”

When you open the Services MMC (services.msc), the following errors appear, and the list of services may or may not display after dismissing the error message dialog boxes.

One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either:

1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or

2) You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.

As a result, the page might not display correctly.

… followed by the error Object doesn’t support property or method ‘ConnectTo’ in URL mmcndmgr.dll/views.js.

Resolution

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press Enter.

Navigate to the following registry branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones

Under the Zones key, delete the subkey shown with an ASCII character, as in the above graphic. If it doesn’t exist, ignore and proceed to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0

Double-click the DWORD value named 1200, and type 0 as its value data. The DWORD value 1200 corresponds to IE Security Zone setting “Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins”. Setting the value to 0 permits ActiveX controls and plug-ins.

Exit the Registry Editor, log off, and log back in back to your account.

  1. AMAZING! I also had this problem. In task manager, under services this error would pop up. Using this, the error went away. THANKS

  2. That’s all very well & good, but in my RegEdit, there isn’t a Zones section – in fact there’s nothing after WinTrust.

I downloaded & ran the FixIt prog, which made no difference.

What I don’t get is that despite the error displaying “Web Browser” in the title, it’s coming up at boot up, even before any browsers have been opened.

Although everything seems to work as it should do, the pop-up warning is most irritating, and a simple way of disabling the message would be just as good (ie. one of those checkboxes that say “Don’t Remind Me Of This Again” would be ideal).
