Good job, worked a treat!
The option to do this in XP was “Start” > “Set program access and defaults” I changed all my settings manually to my preferred apps. I’ve never installed google chrome.

me too … still cant get it to work … google chrome has disappointed me to the point where i will NOT use the application again !! it seems to be related to installing and uninstalling google chrome

Thank you so much for the advice. I too ran into this problem after installing and uninstalling chrome. I was ready to pull my hair out and cry until I asked you what to do. It seems to have worked like a charm. I really do appreciate your site.
