Q: The speaker icon in the Notification area has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says The audio service is not running. When I right click on the it I get 3 options (Playback devices, Recording devices, Sounds) There is also an open volume mixer option but it’s greyed out.

Solution

1. Click Start, type Services.msc in the Start Search box.

2. Scroll down the list of services, right-click Windows Audio and select Start.

3. Select Properties for Windows Audio and set its Startup Type to Automatic.

If the Windows Audio service does not start and you get the error Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start, then make sure that the following services are started and their Startup Type is set to Automatic.

  • Plug and Play
  • Multimedia Class Scheduler
  • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

@Robbie, that worked! I disabled the “Power” service not knowing that it was linked to the audio services. Thanks for posting!

Hey thanks Robbie! It worked a treat!…. We should really get to know about all these services we’re not familiar with.

    Hi All

Open up services.msc from the run command.

Look for a service called ‘Power’ have it set to automatic and fire it up if it is not running.

Then start Windows Audio Endpoint Builder Service
    Then start Windows Audio Service

Yet more hidden service dependencies we really should no about but were not told.

I tried all those options also. My problem is that the volume mixer or sound control for that matter is not working. I can hear sounds and music etc. but i just can’t control the volume. It’s really a pain.

Just want to thank you for the advice below. Sure worked for me. Why has using windows become so difficult for the lay people?

    God bless!

I tried everything, but, when I start the “windows Audio service”, I get an error “windows could not start the audio service on local computer
    error 0×8007000e
not enough storage is avalable to compleate this operation”!
Not only this, I could not start help and support, windows sidebar does not starts and I get the same error when starting system restore also, I booted with Vista DVD and ran a system restore there, but no use, even the system got restored, it is still like this.

You can try running sfc /scannow. Go to Command Prompt, run as administrator and type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes.

Tried everything you suggested and still no sound. All the settings were set on automatic. I went through your procedures anyway and I am still without sound. Any suggestions?
